BROWN HOPPER INCIDENCE NOTICED ON PADDY

The recent surveys conducted by the PAU team indicated that incidence of brown plant hopper has been observed on paddy in certain areas of the state. The Head, Department of Entomology, Dr. A.K.Dhawan said that the incidence is in light moderate form. The young nymphs and adult hoppers feed on plants by sucking sap that leads to the yellowing of leaves particularly from the leaf sheath. The crop dries up in patches; he said, adding that with the drying up of plants the hoppers migrate to the adjoining plants to damage them. In few days, the area of the dry patches enlarges, if the pest is not managed. For the management of the pest spraying 40 ml Confidor 200 SL (Imidacloprid) or 800 ml Ekalux/Quinguard 25 EC (Quinalphos) or one liter Coroban/Dursban 20 EC (Chlorpyriphos) or 560 ml Thiodan/Endocel 35 EC (Endosulfan) or 560 ml Nuvacron 36 SL (Monocrotophos) in 100 liter water prove useful. The experts suggest that for better effectiveness, the spray should be directed towards the base of the plants. The entomologist (Rice), Dr. P.S.Sarao, said that If the damage is noticed at hopper burn stage, the affected spots should be treated alongwith their 3-4 meter periphery immediately as these spots harbour high pest population. The Head, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Dr. M.S.Gill, while making this flash message suggested farmers to be vigilant in noticing the pest or disease attack on the crop.
