BJP favours early verdict on title suit

NEWDELHI: Breaking its silence over the Ayodhya issue, the BJP has harked back to the issue of construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Reacting to the deferment by the Supreme Court of the Ayodhya title-suit verdict by the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, the BJP has signalled that it favoured early court verdict to resolve "the issue of construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya."

The BJP core committee met on Friday morning to discuss the Ayodhya issue. The meeting was attended by BJP president Nitin Gadkari, Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, former BJP presidents Murli Manohar Joshi, M Venkaiah Naidu and Rajnath Singh, besides, Ravi Shankar Prasad, who is also counsel for Ram Lalla Virajman and S S Ahluwalia.

BJP patriarch L K Advani could not attend the meeting as he is visiting Somnath on Saturday to mark the 20th anniversary of his Ram Rath Yatra. Firebrand Sadhvi Uma Bharati is expected to join him. It was on September 25, 1990, that Advani launched his Rath Yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya, but he was arrested in Samastipur in Bihar.

At the end of the meeting, Arun Jaitley read out a brief statement, which spoke of Ram Temple at Ayodhya, ahead of the title-suit verdict: "The BJP is of the considered opinion that judicial delays over the last 61 years have contributed to the failure of the resolution of the issue of construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya. We hope that the resolution of this issue is not delayed any further."

Significantly, on the same day, the VHP, too, held its own meeting on the Ayodhya issue and declared that the entire area of nearly 70-acres that includes the disputed site and the Centrally-acquired land constitutes the Ram Temple Complex, on which no Mosque can come up.

The high-powered 45-member Sant Committee of the VHP that met earlier in the day, warned of nationwide but peaceful protests, in the event of an adverse court verdict, even while making it clear that all legal options would be availed.

The meeting was attended by Pejawar Mutt Swami Vishvesh Tirth, Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati and Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas President Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, besides VHP leaders Ashok Singhal, Praveen Togadia, Vishnu Hari Dalmia and Acharya Giriraj Kishore, among others.

Pejawar Mutt Swami Vishvesh Tirth said the proposed nationwide agitation would not be through violence but through peaceful means. "Sants will abide by the law and formulate protests within the democratic framework," he said.

VHP supremo Ashok Singhal declared that no Mosque can come up anywhere in the nearly 70-acre area, which, he described, as the Ram Temple complex. This was the Second Sant Committee meeting that took place, after the first meeting held in Haridwar during the Kumbh Mela.
