Free Anti-Rabies Vaccination for pets at GADVASU Veterinary Hospital, Ludhiana

Rabies is a dreadful disease and vaccination against this disease is mandatory for pet dogs to safeguard the family members and human population. It is acute, progressive, incurable viral encephalitis with a fatal outcome which is transmitted through injection of infectious saliva into a broken skin mainly through animal bite, licking of scratches, abrasions, and open wounds. Dr. Sushil Prabhakar HOD of Vet. Clinical Complex GADVASU said that the risk of contracting rabies depended upon the virus content of saliva, severity of the bite etc. Rabies is one of the oldest recognized diseases affecting humans and one of the most important zoonotic diseases in India. It has been recognized in India since the Vedic period (1500–500 BC). Rabies is endemic in India, and is primarily a disease of terrestrial and airborne mammals, including dogs, wolves, foxes, coyotes, jackals, cats, bobcats, lions, mongooses, skunks, badgers, bats, monkeys and humans. The dog has been, and still is, the main reservoir of rabies in India.

In India, about 15 million people are bitten by animals, mostly dogs, every year and need post-exposure prophylaxis. Since 1985, India has reported an estimated 25 000–30 000 human deaths from rabies annually. Because rabies is not a notifiable disease in India and there is no organized surveillance system of human or animal cases, the actual number of deaths may be much higher. The figure projected by the Association for Prevention and Control of Rabies in India in collaboration with the World Health Organization, is more than 20,000 deaths from rabies per year. A steady increase in the number of cases involving dog bites demands proper prevention against this disease so that the dogs don't get infected and transmit the infection to humans.

To curb this fatal disease 28th Sept. is marked for World Rabies Day. In this connection Veterinary Hospital, GADVASU is holding a free anti-rabies vaccination camp at the small animal clinic of GADVASU 27-9-10 from 9.30am to 12.30 pm. All the pet owners are invited to avail the facility of anti-rabies vaccination and protect their pets against this deadly disease.
