Canada hopeful RIM, India can agree on BlackBerry data access

OTTAWA — India and Canadian BlackBerry maker Research in Motion should agree on allowing India access to the device\'s encrypted data, Canadian Trade Minister Peter Van Loan said Friday after a meeting with his Indian counterpart.

India has given RIM a two-month deadline to provide its intelligence services access to BlackBerry\'s encoded data.

After a meeting with India\'s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Anand Sharma, Van Loan told reporters that RIM and New Delhi were currently negotiating a similar accord to one the company has already reached with Canada.

Under this agreement, Canada\'s police can intercept telephone calls, emails and text messages sent by BlackBerry devices after obtaining a judicial warrant, Van Loan was quoted as saying by CBC television.

\"My understanding is that India is seeking the same thing, and we believe RIM can arrive at a resolution on that basis,\" the minister said.

He said such an arrangement would protect privacy, \"while at the same time allowing legitimate security interests to be represented.\"

With 1.1 million users in India, RIM is presently threatened with a ban on BlackBerry smartphone services in the United Arab Emirates and is also negotiating an access agreement with Saudi Arabia.
