Suicide bomber kills 20 in Afghan mosque

A suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in north-western Afghanistan, officials said, killing more than 20 people, according to initial reports.



Hundreds of worshippers had gathered at the mosque for Eid al—Adha prayers in the province of Faryab.



Local media, quoting government officials in Faryab, said more than 20 people had died and scores were wounded, most of them civilians.



"The suicide bomber detonated his vest inside the mosque when people were coming out after finishing the prayers," said Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the Interior Ministry.



Hundreds of people had gathered to pray at the start of the Muslim festival in the biggest mosque in Maimana, the capital of Faryab, he said.



"We fear a big number of casualties," Sediqqi said.



The chief of police of the province might have been one of the casualties, a parliamentarian told Tolo television.
