Elderly woman from Guntur killed in US, granddaughter kidnapped

GUNTUR/KANIGIRI, October 24, 2012

An elderly woman, Venna Satyavathi (61), was slain by unidentified miscreants, who also kidnapped her 10-month-old granddaughter, Venna Sravani, at a suburban apartment in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania State in the United States on Monday afternoon.

Satyavathi was living with her daughter in Brodipet before she left for the US, three months ago.

Her husband, Venna Konda Reddy, retired as a Mandal Education Officer in Prakasam district. She had gone to the US to look after her granddaughter. Her son, Ramprasad Reddy, and daughter-in-law, Ch. Latha, are both software professionals.

The incident occurred at about 12 noon on Monday. "We have no details about the incident. We are told that my aunt was clobbered with a sharp object. An appeal for release of his daughter was issued by my brother-in law yesterday. I got the news at about 10.30 p.m. on Monday," Mr. Srinivas Reddy told The Hindu on Tuesday.

Tearful scenes

Tearful scenes were witnessed at the family's apartment in Guntur soon after news of the tragedy trickled in on Tuesday morning. On hearing the news, a distraught Mr. Konda Reddy went into shock. Family members said his son, Mr. Ramprasad, had gone to the US eight years ago and bought an apartment in Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended over the ancestral house of Satyavathi in Kudumulakunta of Hanumanthunipadu Mandal in adjoining Prakasam district. Satyavathi, hailing from Kudumulakunta, was visiting her son to help the couple by taking care of the baby.

Mr. Ramprasad and Ms. Latha were away at work on Monday when the tragedy occurred. Unidentified offenders forced their way into the house and snatched the baby girl from the hands of her grandmother.

The HM Padu police said they were in touch with higher officials in Hyderabad, to help the family.
