CHILE DELEGATION DELIBERATES ON VARIOUS AGRI-ASPECTS AT PAU

LUDHIANA, OCTOBER 26:



To identify potential areas for entering into joint venture with the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), the visiting delegation from Chile gave power point preventions here today. The members including Dr Ivan Ariel Matus Tejos, National Institute of Agri Research, Chile; Prof. Serigo Rodriguez Royo, Pontificia University Catholic of Chile; and Prof. Gabino Reginato Meza, University of Chile; explained about their respective institutions with thrust on historical background, academic system and agreements, multi-disciplinary research, experimental stations and facilities available.



Dwelling upon agriculture in Chile, the delegates highlighted that the country is a healthy growing economy with a population of nearly 17 million people. Being the main exporter of fresh fruits in Southern Hemisphere, the country is transforming \"dirt and stones\" into hi-yield prime land by integrating skilled management and advanced farm techniques and technologies. Referring to research areas, the delegates told that grain quality, yield potential, quality of protein; biotic and abiotic stress tolerance; environmental adaptability and agronomic traits are the major objectives of the wheat and rice breeding programmes. Different types of wheat varieties such as winter, facultative, spring and durum are cultivated in Chile, said they, while revealing that the yield of wheat, during 2010-11, has been 5.8 t/ha. They disclosed that Chile has the longest lentil crop history in New World since it was introduced by Spanish in sixteenth century.



Welcoming the delegates and the university experts, Dr J.S. Dhiman, Additional Director of Research (Natural Resource and Plant Health Management), said that there are lot of possibilities for tie-ups in terms of horticulture, water use efficiency, agri-economics, education, communication, soil science, germplasm resource, food processing, biotechnology, and exchange of student- scientist.



Mr Roderigo Gallardo, Counselor of Agri- Affairs remarked, "There are many collaborative opportunities and to get value from cooperative venture, it is only through agriculture, we can fill the gap."



During the interactive session with a group of PAU experts, queries pertaining to crop yield and diseases, measures to reduce cost of cultivation, forestry, farm mechanization, straw management, spraying techniques, and irrigation methods were responded. The heads of various departments and scientists of wheat section participated in the meet. The delegates visited Crops Museum, Nano-technology Lab and School of Agricultural Biotechnology. Besides, they had a glimpse of the cultural extravaganza during the concluding function of "Inter-College Golden Jubilee Youth Festival" of PAU.
