Merger with Congress possible if statehood is granted: TRS

NEW DELHI, October 25, 2012

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has offered to work out relations with the Congress if the Centre comes out with a concrete action plan for introducing a Bill for the new Telangana State in the coming winter session of Parliament.

The TRS said it would not rule out discussions on merging with the Congress provided the separate State demand was accepted by the UPA-II regime. TRS senior leader and Sircilla MLA K.T. Rama Rao said: "We are open to the possibility of working together with the Congress, and [as to] what form this working arrangement [should take] can be discussed. We only want the Bill on Telangana to be brought in the winter session of Parliament."

Mr. Rama Rao, who is the son of the TRS president and former Union Minister, K. Chandrasekhara Rao, was talking to The Hindu on the phone. He warned that if the UPA regime did not bring in the Bill, the TRS would ensure that the Congress/UPA was defeated in the next Assembly/Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Rama Rao said: "Consensus could also be a majority opinion. Why should the Congress go back on its promise?"
