Stirs dampen festive spark

LUDHIANA: The arrest of 29 protesters on Wednesday has cast a shadow over the sale of firecrackers in the grain market of the city. Fear of the violent demonstrations is forcing the residents to think twice before going to the wholesale market to buy firecrackers this festive season.

\"We want to buy crackers from the wholesale market as the cost less. However, as Diwali is approaching, crackers will get costlier. There have been protests and I could not go to the wholesale market as my children insist on going with me,\" said Pankaj Arora of New Model Town. Vikram, from Model Town area, said he has not been able to buy crackers because of the issue. \"If the situation remains the same, we will be left with no choice but to buy crackers at a costlier price from nearby areas,\" he said.

Meanwhile, the wholesalers rue drop in sales.

\"We have suffered a loss of over Rs 1.5 crore in the last few days. The residents are avoiding coming to the market for the fear of being attacked by the protesters. On Wednesday, some protesters had even threatened to set the market on fire. However these people were flushed out by police,\" said Vishal Sharma, vice-president of the Ludhiana Wholesale Fireworks Association.
