Shah Rukh Khan turns 48 today; says he wants to work for society

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who turned 48 today, said he wants to work for the upliftment of society.

\"From this birthday onwards at least till two years I want to do work for upliftment of people who don\'t have life as good as me. I want to do something good in small little bits and pieces. I have told people in my team let\'s go and help needy people in a bigger way,\" SRK told reporters here.

When asked if he wants to open an NGO, he said, \"If I open an NGO I can\'t give time. My work is to give funds. I would help more NGOs rather than having my own.\" His children wished him at midnight and the actor says that since they are growing, he wants to spend more time with them. \"Looking forward to spending a lot of quality time with my kids. I feel I need to spend little more time with them,\" he adds.

Like every year, hundreds of fans gathered outside his residence \'Mannat\' to wish the actor on his birthday.

Shah Rukh said he was \"overwhelmed\" on seeing the number of people coming to wish him every year.

He waved at his fans and did a small jig for them, who had been braving the police and his bodyguards. The crowd was bursting crackers, played drum beats, kept calling out his name again and again.

\"It feels great that so many people come here to wish me every year. I wish I could meet them, but if I do so, it will be all unorganised. I thank everyone for the love and wish them good health, success and happiness,\" he said.

\"The small little things like these matter the most. Not many people get to see so many people around their house to celebrate birthday. Not Many people get the love that I am getting and I am thankful to god for this,\" he said.

The actor, who decided to celebrate his birthday at home with his family and close friends, said he is not a big birthday party person. But he does love to accept gifts. He is amazed when people think what to gift a person like him who has everything.

\"I am not used to celebrate birthday. Everything my fans do...be it beating drums, photos etc. I wake up with the noise they make on my birthday. I love gifts. I look forward to opening gifts. \'Chota mota sa bangla, gaadi\' (a small bungalow or car), collector\'s car...\'kuchh bhi de dijiye\' (anything you give),\" he added.

\"There was a pendant my mom used to wear before she passed away...that\'s precious. It has got my mom and dad\'s picture...I wear it sometimes,\" he said.

Wearing a white shirt with denims and sporting a pony tail, Shah Rukh says he doesn\'t believe in comparing it with the previous year as every year is lucky for him.

He appealed to the youngsters not to smoke and added that those who quit smoking might inspire him.

Professionally, SRK says he is in a happy space and wants to do different kind of roles.

\"I would like to be reborn as an actor, I am ok if I am not reborn as a famous actor. Acting is a noble profession. Till my last breath I will keep working. There are two three characters in my mind...that I am writing, I would like to play them on screen. But I don\'t want to tell about the roles I want to do,\" he added.

The \'King of Bollywood\' says he gets up every day and wishes to work hard and pay the love and care that he had been getting.

Shah Rukh had started his career in 1988 with a televisions serial \'Fauji\'. He later entered Bollywood in 1992 with \'Deewana\'. He went on to give memorable films like \'Darr\', \'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge\', \'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai\', \'Devdas\', \'Don\', \'Chak De! India\', \'Swades\', \'My Name is Khan\' and the recent record breaking film \'Chennai Express\'.

Currently, SRK is shooting for his much-talked about film \'Happy New Year\' with Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani and others.
