Irate panchyat chiefs interrupt Rahul Gandhi\'s speech, slam J&K govt

The anger of panchayat representatives against the Omar Abdullah government exploded on Wednesday when they interrupted Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's address at a meeting and complained about lack of power and security in the state.

Leading the charge was Parikshit Singh, the sarpanch from Ramnagar in Udhampur district, who stood up and grabbed the mike during Rahul's meeting with panchayat leaders in Jammu to complain against the state government. "All sarpanchs present here belong to the Congress.

Every one of us bears true allegiance to you. We have been betrayed by the state government. We have been rendered powerless. We have got nothing from the state government… We want the Centre to help us (in getting our rights)," Singh said.

Rahul, who had almost concluded his speech at the panchayat conference, assured the sarpanch of all help and support in empowering the rural bodies in Jammu and Kashmir. "I will fight for you. I will continue to build pressure on state government for your empowerment," Rahul said.

Earlier, Rahul touched the raw nerve of his ally National Conference (NC) when he said he would not rest till 73rd and 74th amendment of the Constitution is implemented in Jammu and Kashmir.

"We are building pressure on the state government to implement 73rd and 74th amendment. We will continue to do it till those are implemented," Rahul said.
