CROP PRODUCE COMPETITION FOR FARMERS AT PAU KISAN MELA

LUDHIANA, AUGUST 27:-----



The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will organize a "Crop Produce Competition" during its on-campus Kisan Mela at Ludhiana, scheduled to be held on September 21-22.



Divulging contours, Dr SPS Brar, Senior Extension Specialist (field crops) and Convener of Produce Competition Committee, said that the competition of the recommended and approved varieties of vegetables including okra (bhindi), bitter gourd (karela), chillies, ram tori, radish, cowpea, brinjal, ghiya kaddu (long and round), halwa kaddu or any other vegetable will take place during the farmers' fair. In addition to the competition of the recommended and approved varieties of field crops such as maize (cobs)/baby corn, cotton, sugarcane, etc., competition of recommended varieties of fruits including guava, lime and lemon, malta, grape fruit, papaya or any other fruit will also be held, he informed. Among flowers, samples of marigold, loose rose, tuberose (rajni gandha) or any other flower will be received.



Dr Brar told the sample size for the vegetables including okra (bhindi), bitter gourd (karela), chillies, ram tori, radish and cowpea will be half-a-kg whereas for ghiya kaddu (long and round) and halwa kaddu, it will be three pieces and one piece, respectively. The sample size for fruits like guava, lime and lemon and malta will be half-a-kg while for grape fruit and papaya, it will be two pieces of each, respectively. He elaborated that the sample size for maize (cobs)/baby corn will be five cobs whereas for flowers such as marigold and loose rose, it will be half-a-kg and for tuberose, it will be six sticks.



The produce competition will be held on the first day of the PAU Kisan Mela i.e. September 21, informed Dr. Brar adding that the entries for the competition will be entertained up to 11.30 a.m. at the produce competition stall, near PAU Kairon Kisan Ghar. The samples of the produce may be brought personally by the farmers from each district. Advising the farmers that they can seek guidance from the District Extension Specialists (DESs) and faculty members of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) for participation in the competition, Dr Brar told that no produce samples brought by DESs/KVK faculty members will be entertained for this competition. Besides, awarding prizes and certificates to the winning entries during the mela, consolation prizes for any other best flower, fruit, vegetable or crop and two special prizes for each category will also be awarded. Dr. Brar said that two special prizes for vegetable, fruit, flower and crops will also be awarded.
