Afghan Government Can\'t Afford Election

Afghanistan\'s parliamentary elections have been delayed by four months until September because the country does not have enough money to hold them.

The vote was scheduled for May 22, but Afghanistan still needs another £25m to meet its estimated £60m budget.

A Foreign Office spokesperson backed the move, saying: \"This decision is in line with the Afghan constitution and electoral law.

\"The revised date in September will allow more time to ensure credible elections in support of Afghanistan\'s democratic progress.\"

Afghanistan\'s senior election commissioner Fazel Ahmed told a news conference in Kabul there are also concerns about security and logistics.

The announcement comes days before President Hamid Karzai is due to visit London for a key conference on Afghanistan.

America had pressed for a postponement after last year\'s presidential elections were marred by fraud.

They argued another flawed vote would destroy support for President Karzai\'s government and undermine support for US aid to the country.
