Present political culture hampers growth of India, says US based Punjabi NRI journalist

FATEHGARH SAHIB : NRI journalist and chief editor of Punjab News of Newspapers Group, USA Satnam Singh Chahal shared his experiences on wide variety of problems related to India in general and Punjab in particular.

He expressed his disappointment with the politician with the way they are indulging in tall claims and the promises they make with public remain unfulfilled. He said with this kind of political culture India wouldn't be able to make progress and it would be a big hurdle in improving the lot of the masses. He said the need of the hour is that public must force the politicians to work according to needs and requirements of former. Expressing his deep dissatisfaction with the present political set up, he said in spite of six decades of independence, a major chunk of the population still go to bed empty stomach. He cited the reason for this sorry state of affairs to the wrong policies of politicians and their own vested interests.

Chahal further said that fast increasing population of India is the root cause of all the major hurdles in the progress of India. The limited resources of the country are unable to cope with pressure of ever growing population. He said in this direction the government of India must take certain stern steps and strict enforcement of laws as has been done in China to control the population. He said if India wishes to emerge as a developed nation to attain hundred percent literacy rate, the government must come out with some legal framework and certain concessions and benefits can be accorded to those who opt for family planning.

He said in democracy media has been playing a constructive and leading role in the development of the country. In India, media has rightly emerged as the fourth pillar of the democracy after legislature, judiciary and executive. But at the same time the print and electronic media is ignoring the basic tenets of use of media and there has been increasing corporatization of media. In stead of highlighting the plight of the masses, media is indulging in the race for more and more advertisements.

He said in democracy the legislature is responsible for the welfare of the masses as it makes laws keeping in view of the problems of the public and development of the national It is the executive which has to implement the law made by the legislature. But unfortunately in India, the executive is cares for the legislature nor it likes to be accountable to anybody. He said the executives are acting more like rulers than servants of the public and this is the reason that many of our developmental and public welfare schemes fails to take off. In India, which is also the largest democracy of the world, the need of the hour is that India must be a not namesake but in letter and spirit also.

He said public faces lot of problems to get their work done in the government offices. People have to make many rounds of the offices and a large majority of them are unaware of the official procedures to be followed. This leads to their exploitation at the hands of the bureaucrats and the officialdom. Day by day, confidence of public is eroding in bureaucracy and legislature he added.

He also lamented over the treatment being meted out to the Punjabi language in Punjab, He said one can easily find government hording in Hindi and use of English for noting by the government officials. Though the Punjab government claims to be working for the promotion of the Punjabi language but in reality the government's attitude of indifference towards it is quite clear and one cannot expect better treatment form bureaucrats also in this situation, he added.
