BSF foils infiltration bid by terrorists in Samba

NEW DELHI : As Pakistan-based terrorist outfits shift their focus from the snowblocked infiltration routes of Kashmir to the more accessible Jammu

region to sneak in jehadis, the BSF has reported as many as five ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the international border in the past one week. The latest infiltration bid was foiled by the BSF in the wee hours of Tuesday in the Samba sector, as its men repulsed heavy firing from the Pakistani side, forcing the alleged terrorists to beat a retreat.

Heavy fire was exchanged between the Pakistani and Indian side soon after the BSF, after spotting some movement at two border posts in Samba sector around midnight, opened fire to repulse the infiltrators.

Though terrorists may have been firing at the BSF from the Pakistani side, the BSF has raised a question mark on the role of Pakistani Rangers, with an official pointing out that the latter could not have missed the movement of terrorists so close to its border outpost. Though there was no casualty on our side, the BSF suspects injury to the infiltrating terrorists , with its personnel at the spot indicating the movement of vehicles on the Pakistani side following the firing.

According to the official, the BSF will lodge a formal protest with the Pakistani Rangers at the flag meeting of their area commanders, expected on Wednesday morning.

Though the heavy exchange of fire at the two posts — SM Pur and SM Pur-1 was reported from 1 am on Tuesday, the guns had started blazing at the Kandral border outpost since around 10.30 pm on Monday night. This was the fifth ceasefire violation in the last one week, of which three involved foiled infiltration bids.

On Saturday, a BSF jawan was killed and two injured in cross-border firing at the Kranti post near the Line of Control in Poonch. A predawn ceasefire violation was reported on Sunday at Londi and Bobiya border posts. "Pakistan is trying to send in militants just before the snow blocks the passes on the higher reaches," J&K DGP Kuldeep Khuda was quoted as saying on Tuesday.
