Death toll in Kota bridge collapse rises to 12

Kota : The death toll on Saturday rose to 12 in the collapse of an under-construction bridge over Chambal river with recovery of three more bodies even as two officials arrested in connection with the mishap were remanded in police custody for five days.

\"Three more bodies were today recovered. With this, the death toll has risen to 12,\" IG Kota Range Rajeev Dasot said.

He said efforts were still underway to locate missing labourers.

The two arrested officials J Y Hue, Chief Project Manager of Hyundai Engineering and construction and R Chatopadhyay, deputy project manager of Gamon India--were produced before a local court here which sent them to five-day police remand.

Kota Police has also registered a case against 14 officials of Gammon and Hyundai in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, authorities were today mulling whether to demolish a hanging portion of the structure or give it support to expedite rescue efforts.

A rescue team comprising 200 labourers, 200 policemen, 50 officials, 80 army jawans, 20 experts from calamity relief management of Gujarat besides six naval divers are engaged in the rescue work to find those missing including an engineer working with Hyundai.
