PAU pensioners’ tussle: New body formed with Bansal as president

More than three months after factionalism came out in the open in PAU Pensioners\' Welfare Association, the last meeting of which ended on a dead note in April, D P Maur and Jila Ram Bansal group on Tuesday formed the new association and Bansal was elected president unanimously.

The new association, PAU Retirees\' Welfare Association, with 450 members stands opposite the already existing PAU Pensioners\' Welfare Association with more than 1,500 members led by Sukhdev Singh.

Talking to Ludhiana Newsline, after his election, Bansal said, \"The previous body has done nothing in the past five years except fighting and confronting. All prominent people have joined us and we have managed 450 members in just two months.\"

Talking about the new initiatives that he as president would be taking, he said, \"We have already got \'suwidha\' window approved from vice-chancellor and ultrasound machine will be installed very soon for pensioners. Suwidha window will open on the ground floor of Thapar Hall.\"

Bansal added that they had got passed the pensioners\' scheme papers in two months for members aged 65, 70, 75 and 80.

\"Allotment of funds to the tune of around Rs 63 crore from state government is under process and we are also going to demand formation of pensioners\' bhawan on PAU campus from the vice-chancellor. Medical camps for retirees will be held frequently,\" said Bansal.

However, Sukhdev Singh, president of PAU Pensioners\' Welfare Association, termed the new body completely unconstitutional. \"People with no agenda have got separated from us but it hardly makes a difference to our strong body of more than 1,500 members. We have expelled people like D P Maur and J R Bansal who neither have any financial backing or a plan for welfare of pensioners. They have been completely rejected by the pensioners,\" Sukhdev Singh told Ludhiana Newsline.
