The audience fell silent. Gasped in horror. Ducked behind seats and covered their eyes. Some even laughed. When the 20-minute DVD featuring censored scenes of violence and cuss words was played, audiences got a closer look at the routine difficulties the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) faces in censorship and certification.
As part of the 100 years of Indian Cinema celebrations, CBFC is organising a three-day workshop on censorship that got off to a rousing start at Siri Fort yesterday. With the theme \"On-screen violence and the culture of cuss words\", CBFC CEO Pankaja Thakur threw the workshop open. K Hariharan, director of LV Prasad Film and TV Academy, in a presentation, played clips of censored cuts from popular Telugu, Tamil and Hindi movies, scenes of protagonists setting themselves ablaze, child torture, and aggressive depiction of women.
Hariharan and Thakur were joined by Bollywood producer Ramesh Sippy and director/music composer Vishal Bharadwaj for a panel discussion. As part of the workshop, Anurag Kashyap\'s Gangs of Wasseypur (I) was screened.
There will be presentations and discussions on sex, nudity and politically sensitive issues and screenings of silent film Karma, famous for Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani\'s lip lock and controversial film Dharamputra over the next two days.
