Ek Thi Daayan box office collection is respectable, makes Rs 250 million

office collection seems respectable as Emraan Hashmi film manages to make Rs 250 million at the box office

Despite a widespread publicity, impressionable star cast and good opening, Ek Thi Daayan, a supernatural thriller based on the story of witch, ended its first week on average box office collections.

The Emraan Hashmi starrer film directed by Kannan Iyer, starring Konkana Sen Sharma, Kalki Koechlin and Huma Qureshi as female leads, simply failed to pick up at the box office even during the weekend and weekdays. In its first week, the film managed to gather a meager Rs 25 crore net plus from domestic collection centers.

The film that has earned rave reviews from the critics and the movie goers, though managed a good opening, but weakened as the week progressed further. Ek Thi Daayan registered a good occupancy at the multiplexes in the metros but failed to garner an interest among the other cities. The weekend opening managed to generate Rs 17.10 crores at the box office as the movie saw a considerable drop from Monday onwards. In the first week, its collections were below the mark in multiplexes compared to small screens.

Despite the average collections, the film produced by Vishal Bhardwaj and Ekta Kapoor managed to earn more than the production cost thereby raking the profits. In its opening weekend only, Ek Thi Daayan had earned more than the production cost from theatrical and non-theatrical runs

It may be recalled that Ek Thi Dayan had faced a major threat of getting banned by the President of India due to its subject based on the witchcraft. In fact , wiccan Ipsita Roy Chakraverti's had even filed a petition to the President of India, asking for a ban on the film. It was later forwarded to the national commission for women.

Ek Thi Daayan (literal translation There Once was a Witch) is a generational story of a man and the demons, both literal and figurative, he must face. Hashmi plays the role of Bobo, one of India's most famous magicians. Bobo is also one of India's most tortured souls, as his fiancée Tamara (Huma Qureshi) will soon find out. When he tries to deal with his own past by visiting a family friend who happens to be a psychiatrist, the resulting hypnotherapy session unlocks a decades old mystery surrounding the death of his father and sister at the hands of a shape-shifting witch named Diana (Konkona Sen Sharma) He's soon convinced that Diana is coming to get him when he meets an Indo-Canadian tourist named Lisa Dutt (Kalki Koechlin) who seems to be a reincarnation of the witch from his past. When Bobo loses his mind, he also begins losing the faith and respect of everyone around him, raising the question whether he is really crazy or not.
