Mamata Banerjee heckling: Six SFI activists arrested

New Delhi: Monday, April 22, 2013

Six Students Federation of India (SFI) activists, including SFI general secretary Ritabrata Bandopadhyay and two women, have been arrested on Monday by Delhi police for heckling West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The arrested activists will be produced before the court later today.

The SFI is the students\' wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

The incident took place in Delhi at Planning Commission office when SFI activists heckled her and West Bengal Finance minister Amit Mitra who was accompanying her. Mitra\'s kurta was also torn.

The police had advised Banerjee to not get down from her car and instead drive inside. However, she chose to walk amidst slogan shouting.

SFI later apologised to Mitra and Mamata for the incident. The Trinamool Congress reportedly threatened to protest in the Parliament as no arrest had been made in the case.

"I never expected this type of hooliganism. If I also do it tomorrow, what will be the constitutional position? They can kill me but can't stop me. I am also a product of the student movement," the West Bengal CM said after the incident.
