Selected from amongst 81 applicants from across the globe, Mr Bhatia has won the honour for the academic session 2011-12. The program is in the honour of the world's most eminent rice and wheat breeders: Dr Henry Beachell and Dr Norman Borlaug. Congratulating Mr Bhatia for the prestigious honour, PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr B.S. Dhillon said that the varsity student has brought laurels to the institution. "Fetching highly competitive Beachell-Borlaug Fellowship by three students of PAU namely Banu Kalia (2009), Amandeep sandhu (2010) and Dharminder Bhatia (2011) speaks high of the academic excellence of the university," remarked Dr Dhillon and wished that there will be more recipients of the fellowship from PAU in the future.

The Dean Postgraduate Studies, Dr Gursharan Singh told, "With the primary objective to develop highly educated rice and wheat plant breeders who can serve as future agricultural leaders, the fellowship programme provides an opportunity to work both in developing as well as developed country." He further told that the total budget approved for Mr Bhatia's Ph.D programme is US$116,000 and added that as per the scholars program, he will work for one year in Arizona Genomic Institute, Arizona, the USA. Besides providing an opportunity to meet and interact with World Food Prize laureates at the award giving ceremony, Mr Bhatia will carry forward and work on PAU approved research under the supervision of Dr Allah Rang (Plant Breeding) and Dr Kuldeep Singh (Director of School of Agricultural Biotechnology), informed Dr Singh.
