It’s Diwali at Ralegan Siddhi

Mumbai,(29/08/11)(Tehelkanews)

Residents of Ralegan Siddhi, 70 km from Pune, the village of anti-corruption crusader, Anna Hazare, celebrated Diwali on Sunday.

The villagers timed the celebrations to coincide with Hazare's calling off his 12-day fast on Sunday morning in New Delhi.

Hazare had called off his fast after parliament accepted his three demands on the Lokpal Bill.

The villagers are thinking of not allowing Hazare to go on prolonged fasts in future.

The festive Gudi — traditional flag erected on the Maharashtrian New Year symbolising victory -- adorned houses in the village.

The villagers gathered at the village square since morning to celebrate.

Sarpanch of Ralegan Siddhi, Jaisinh Mapari, cited the historic nature of the day as the reason for the celebrations. Every house in the village had the Diwali special lunch including puranpoli.

"This is the second independence of our nation. Henceforth, August 28 will be celebrated in our village every year," he said.

At 10am, the Tricolour was unfurled at the village school by the sarpanch to coincide with the time Hazare called off his fast.

More than 2,000 villagers danced for more than six hours. Women finished their daily chores early in the morning to be a part of the celebrations.

Hazare's calling off his fast was relief and joy for his brother, Maruti, and his family. For the last 12 days, Hazare's confrontation with the government and his fast had got Maruti worried.

"He has lost more than 7 kg over the last 12 days. Although he has gone on a hunger strike earlier, he had never lost weight to this extent," he said.

Maruti was planning to go to Delhi if Anna would have continued fasting. Mapari echoed Maruti's sentiments and declared that the gram sabha has been mulling a resolution of not allowing Hazare to undertake strenuous fasts. "We have to think of his health," they said.
