PAU IS A TEMPLE OF LEARNING – PAU VC

LUDHIANA, AUGUST 29:-----



"PAU is a renowned temple of learning. The PAU students are the part and parcel of our research system," stated PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, while addressing the postgraduate students of the university here today. The function was organized by the PAU Science Club.



Exhorting the students to work hard and produce good output of science, Dr Dhillon said that this is the golden phase of their life for it will set foundation of their professional growth. Young researchers having fresh mind and fresh ideas should think logically, act responsibly and touch greater heights of achievements. He said that some students have, through their research excellence, have left a mark of pride in the history of the University. PAU is working for the benefit of society, said Dr Dhillon, adding that the university has the history of producing outstanding scientists, academicians, sportspersons, literary figures and stalwarts in different walks of life.



"PAU has produced 35 Vice-Chancellors who served various universities in India and abroad," highlighted Dr Dhillon. He added that the students are the future of the nation. To address the challenges in contemporary agriculture, to exercise social responsibility and to learn to live, the generation Y must think out of box, work hard with dedication and discipline and make PAU indispensable. The students must be made to put their feet on the ground to understand the grassroot realities. Dr. Dhillon said that the basic science research should generate path breaking output.



"It is our duty to make the students good human beings and citizens of the nation. We must endeavour make a healthy society. PAU belongs to you and you are aspiration and hope," remarked Dr Dhillon. Along with emphasis on imparting excellent education and practical training to the students, PAU lays stress on all round personality development of the students. The PAU alumni brought laurels to the university by bagging many prestigious fellowships of professional societies. Dr Dhillon asked the students to learn new techniques, cultivate wild thinking, discuss new ideas, conduct scientific experiments with guidance of advisors, understand the agrarian scenario of the state and the nation and contribute immensely to the country through the knowledge gained from PAU. He shared that PAU has programmes to provide hands-on-trainings to young scientists in foreign laboratories for human resource development. International exposure develops confidence in the researcher, he observed. He shared that the University is thinking of innovation in postgraduate programmes that include preparing thesis in the format of research papers, sending the students for a semester in another University, regular modification in course curriculum to make it need based, etc.



Earlier, welcoming PAU VC, dignitaries and postgraduate students, Dr Gursharan Singh, Dean, Post Graduate Studies, highlighted the achievements of PAU students and told that three students bagged Monsanto's Beachell-Borlaug International Fellowship in 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively. Besides, six students have won INSPIRE fellowships. PAU has 46 % postgraduate students. "Postgraduate students being senior have to establish themselves and act as role models for the juniors," said he. He disclosed that 13 Jawahar Lal Awards have been bestowed to PAU based on the postgraduate research and that in recent years, there has been 20% growth in Ph. D students.



The PAU Director Students' Welfare, Dr DS Cheema, proposing the vote of thanks, said that each day has its own importance and students must realize the value of time. He congratulated the students for winning distinctions and honours and exhorted them to continue working hard and take their alma-mater to great heights. Addressing the students, the Controller of Examinations, Dr BS Sohal said that the students should be proud of PAU for it is one of the best institutes that has given great scientists, administrators and sportspersons to the nation.
