2 held for running fake merchant navy institute

CHANDIGARH : UT crime branch sleuths have arrested two persons for running a fake institute where youths from Punjab were being trained for different merchant navy courses.

They had a registration office from Sector 40, Chandigarh, while main training institute, they claimed, was located somewhere in Punjab.

Those arrested have been identified as Naveen Sharma and Ashok Kumar, both from Sirhind. A Sangrur resident, Gurpiar Singh approached crime branch officials with the complaint that Naveen Sharma and Ashok Kumar, who had opened Indraprasth Marine Manager for Merchant Navy Institute, took Rs 1.5 lakh for giving him admission in a course but when he came to know that institute is fake he demanded his money back, but the accused refused.

Based on his complaint, crime branch sleuths found that institute was not registered, but has offices in different parts of Punjab.

The two accused had opened the institute\'s account in Chandigarh co-operative bank and were taking fees only through demand drafts.

Sub-inspector Rakesh Kumar said both the accused were retired sergeant of Indian Air Force. \"Presently, we have received just one complaint, but a few more youths, who have taken admission in the institute have contacted,\" he said.

Meanwhile, the two accused were produced in the court on Thursday and were sent in seven-day judicial custody.
