Patwaris protest ‘dismal’ allowances

LUDHIANA : Following the call given by Revenue Patwari Union, Punjab Patwaris of Ludhiana tehsil (East and West) organized a dharna in New Courts Complex on Thursday from 11 am to 2 pm against the state government for ignoring their demands for long. The employees rued that the state has not implemented the 5th pay commission and did not increase the allowances paid to patwaris.

The members said since January 1, 1986, there have been no changes in Rs 25-35 as their stationery allowances against their demands worth Rs 500-100. Similarly, travelling allowance was only Rs 240, Rs 360 and Rs 480 based on designation but the government should bring uniformity and increase it to Rs 1,500. Due to inadequate allowances coupled with delay in releasing those, their work got delayed as they had to wait endlessly to purchase the required items, they further alleged.

Moreover, the activists alleged that the government had not given promotions to them for a long time and cited five cases in this regard.

Addressing the demonstration, state union president Rupinder Singh Grewal said the state government had not implemented 5th pay commission on reform patterns. Terming it to be an injustice against patwaris who were getting low allowances as compared to employees in other government departments, he said they would hold another dharna on February 25. "We would intensify our agitations if the government does not listen to our demands," he added.
