200 constables, more PCRs on cards

LUDHIANA : In what spells relief for staff-crunched force, police commissioner Ishwar Singh has got approval to have 200 more constables for the city.

The commissioner has also sent a requisition for more PCR vehicles to increase surveillance here.

Talking to TOI on Monday, Singh said, "The city is all set to get 200 constables from PAP Commandos. Of these, many will be given to the traffic police to regulate the vehicular flow, which is a major problem bothering residents."

He added that to ensure increased surveillance and traffic regulation, he had sent a requisition to the DGP's office, seeking 15 Gypsy jeeps. "These jeeps will be used for outer surveillance, that is for main roundabouts and crossings in the city, and two-wheeler PCR vehicles will be used for surveillance in inner areas and localities," he added.

Notably, the city, with over 30 lakh population, has merely 3,000 cops to maintain law and order and of them, 147 are posted with VIPs for their security. All police stations here are working with 25% of the required staff.

In Chandigarh, there are over 350 traffic cops for its population of approximately a million, but in Ludhiana district, which ranks 17 in the country as far as accidental deaths are concerned, there are around 200 traffic cops.

"It is a welcome step, as it will help regulate city's traffic properly and check inconveniences caused to public," said Kamaljit Soi, executive member, Punjab State Road Safety Council.
