Adani group MD held for evading customs duty

Goa/Panaji : The Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation, Goa, on Saturday arrested Rajesh Adani, Managing Director of M/S. Adani Exports Limited, in Ahmedabad in connection with a criminal case for undervaluation of imports of naphta and furnace oil causing loss of Rs.1.07crore to the exchequer.

S.S. Gavli, Superintendent of Police, CBI (Goa) told journalists here on Saturday that the ACB, CBI Goa Branch had registered a criminal case against 10 officials of Goa Customs and Central Excise and private parties, namely M/S. Adani Export Ltd., Ahmedabad, M/S. Ganesh Benzoplast Ltd., Mumbai, and CHA/clearing house firm M/S. J.A. F. Leitao & Son, Goa in April 2008.

The allegations were that the 10 customs officials, in conspiracy with the aforesaid private parties, dishonestly and by abuse of their official positions facilitated import by undervaluing from Goa customs in 2005-06 two consignments of naphta and one of furnace oil. The same were imported by Adani Exports and stored in bonded warehouse of M/S. Ganesh Benzoplast of Vasco, Goa.

Mr. Gavli said the CBI would move for his remand and he would be brought to Goa for interrogation as further investigation of critical areas of the case was on.
