J&K: 1 protestor killed in fresh clashes with CRPF, curfew re-imposed in Shopian

Srinagar: A youth was killed in clashes with security forces as fresh protests on Wednesday rocked Shopian in Kashmir, where CRPF firing on Saturday had claimed four lives. Rafiq Ahmad Rather was killed when CRPF personnel allegedly opened fire to disperse protestors outside their camp at Gagran village, 52 km from Srinagar. A large number of people had assembled outside the camp to protest the killing of four persons, including three local youth, by CRPF troopers last Saturday. Soon after the death of Rather, the protestors went on the rampage and set ablaze the official residence of a senior officer in the town. Curfew was reimposed in the south Kashmir town on Sunday following widespread clashes between security forces and agitated residents. A large number of people had assembled outside the camp to protest the killing of 4 persons, including 3 local youth, by CRPF troopers on Saturday. Earlier violence broke out following the killing of four people in CRPF firing. The CRPF maintains they were trying to attack their camp, though preliminary investigations show at least three were locals with no prior record.
