Lt Col Bikram Jeet and two soldiers were shot dead at an army camp in Samba, said the defence spokesperson. An encounter between the terrorists and security forces is underway at the Samba army camp.

\"The encounter is going on and additional forces, including CPRF personnel, have been rushed to the army camp,\" said Rajesh Kumar, inspector general (IG) of police, Jammu.

The terrorists first attacked the Hiranagar police station in Kathua around 6.45am and killed four police officials.

\"The terrorists, between three and four in number, reached the national highway and boarded an auto-rickshaw. They reached Hiranagar police station and opened fire indiscriminately, killing four police personnel.\"

The terrorists then went back to the national highway and boarded a truck at gun point. They shot dead the conductor and reached the army camp at Samba. They then shot dead the truck driver and entered the army camp.

The terror attack comes three days ahead of a scheduled meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in New York on the sidelines of the UN general assembly meet.

In 2002, terrorists had attacked Kaluchak army camp in the same area in Samba district and killed 31 people - three army personnel, 18 family members of army men and 10 civilians.
