6 killed as building collapses in Vadodara, several trapped

New Delhi, August 28, 2013:-At least six persons were killed when a three-storey building collapsed in Madhavnagar locality in Vadodara district in Gujarat in the wee hours on Wednesday.

The incident occurred behind Atlandara area around 4.30am when the buildings came crashing down, catching the sleeping occupants unawares, HJ Tapariya, chief fire brigade officer of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation said.



About 14 families were staying in the building.



Manish Bhardwaj, Vadodara Municipal Commissioner, Satish Sharma, city police commissioner and city Mayor Bharat Shah and other senior officials have rushed to the site.



\"Rescue and relief operations are in full swing.However, it is difficult to tell the exact number of people trapped under the debris. A few people, including a minor girl, have been rescued from the site so far,\" Vadodara mayor Bharat Shah said.



Talking to PTI, he said, \"I was admitted to hospital and soon after learning about this mishap, I am on my way to the site.



According to Tapariya, about 13 to 14 families were staying there.

\"Eight have been evacuated and five bodies found so far\" said Vinod Rao, a senior official said.



While several people are believed to be still trapped under the rubble. The rescue operations are going on in full swing.



Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have arrived to assist the fire brigade in the rescue work.



The injured have been rushed to SSG hospital for treatment.
