CWC endorses economic reforms

NEW DELHI, September 25, 2012

Asking the opposition to play a more constructive role, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Tuesday backed the government's decision on economic reforms and said it was essential to control inflation.

The meeting headed by party chairperson Sonia Gandhi was attended by 30 members, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.

Addressing the CWC, Ms. Gandhi said economic reforms were essential and the opposition should play a constructive role.

"Congress president said it is necessary to improve economy and government has taken measures in that direction," Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi told reporters after the meeting.

"Opposition parties have played a negative role and they should play a more constructive role," Mr. Dwivedi said.

"The finance minister was called to explain the current reforms. He said the government was worried over falling value of the rupee and increasing inflation.

"Economic reforms were needed to ensure that the global economic crisis doesn't affect Indian economy," said Mr. Dwivedi.

He quoted Ms. Gandhi as saying that the government was stable and there was no danger to it despite the Trinamool Congress leaving the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

Addressing the meeting, the prime minister said the government could not implement its flagship development programmes till the economy was sound.

The government's decisions to allow overseas investment in retail and aviation have created political turmoil in the country with key ally Trinamool Congress pulling out of the UPA and opposition parties, both from political right and left, demanding a rollback.

Ms. Gandhi also expressed concern over communal violence in Assam in July that claimed 97 lives and left 4.8 lakh people in relief camps.
