Clear policy on cloud computing sought

Infosys Executive Co-chairman S. Gopalakrishnan has urged the Central Government to come out with the right policy for cloud computing in the context of confusion over data ownership.



In an exclusive interview with this correspondent on the sidelines of a summit here, Mr. Gopalakrishnan identified cloud computing and mobile technology as the main drivers for the information technology (IT) industry in the future. Services to citizens such as banking, insurance, health care and education were moving to the cloud, mainly because it was cheaper, had infinite storage capacities and ensured mobility. "But the main challenge is to come out with the right policy for cloud computing that would also have a regulatory mechanism," he said.



Mr. Gopalakrishnan said the IT industry had established a global model that was viable and offered better services to IT companies across the world.



Mobile and cloud had great potential. The IT industry should take advantage of this transition by creating new businesses/models, he said.



Indian companies were yet to take to cloud computing in a big way.



In reply to the technology changes in the media industry and the shift to digital editions, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said the Indian media had the advantage in that they were learning from the developed market. But the situation was changing and the media industry, whether print or satellite channels, should look at value addition for their readers or viewers.
