Movie review: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a \'been-here\', \'seen-this\' kind of filmShubhra Gupta

New Delhi,Jun 01 2013:--

It\'s been a few minutes since I stepped out of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and I\'m finding it hard to remember what I\'ve just seen. This is not the sort of amnesia that you have to force yourself into after a bad, blah film. This is because I\'ve seen this brand new film, and its characters so many, many times before. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a been-here, seen-this, much-too-long glossy creature, and not much else.

Ranbir Kapoor plays the I-want-to-fly fellow who doesn\'t want to be tied down. Familiar? Oh yeah, we\'ve seen a hundred variations of Bunny aka Kabir Thapar. Deepika Padukone is Naina, the proverbial girl in the glasses, always with her nose buried in a book, always driven to doing the right thing. Seen that before? So when Bunny and Naina meet and bicker and get intense and part, we know where this is headed. Which we are ready for, because that\'s what romantic comedies are about. But the thing with the best rom-coms is how the oldest story in the world — boy meets girl, and they live happily ever after — gets a fresh telling. On that crucial test, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani scores low.

The supporting parts, essayed by Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur, her as the cool chick who then does the conventional thing like saying yes to an arranged marriage, and him as the hero\'s best buddy who turns hostile for no convincing reason, are also cobbled from bits and pieces. Because it is a Karan Johar production, we get the big fat Indian wedding, the geet and the sangeet and the whole zardozi, lehnga, mehndi, shebang, in multifarious doses. We also get Madhuri Dixit as Item Girl, and she blanks out as soon as she\'s out of sight, too.

Petrol price hiked by 75 paise, diesel by 50 paise

Jun 01, 2013,New Delhi:--

Petrol price was on Monday was hiked by 75 paisa per litre and diesel by 50 paisa a litre as rupee hit 11-month low making oil imports costlier. The increase in rates, which are excluding local sales tax or VAT, will be effective from midnight tonight, Indian Oil Corp, the nation\'s largest oil firm, said.

Petrol price in Delhi was hiked by 90 paisa to Rs 63.99 a litre from Rs 63.09 currently, while diesel will cost Rs 50.25 per litre from tomorrow as against Rs 49.69 currently.

Also, the oil companies cut price of cooking gas (LPG) that consumers have to buy beyond their quota of nine subsidised cylinders in a year, by Rs 45 per bottle. Non-subsidised domestic LPG in Delhi will now cost Rs 802 per 14.2-kg cylinder as against Rs 847 currently.

Oil companies also cut price of LPG that consumers have to buy beyond their quota of nine subsidised cylinders in a year, by Rs 45 per bottle.

The increase in petrol price is the first in three months, the last hike being on March 1. Since then, petrol prices had been cut four times on falling global oil prices. For diesel, this is the fifth increase in rates this year.

State-owned oil firms had been in January authorised to raise diesel prices by up to 50 paisa per litre every month till entire losses on the fuel are wiped out. Diesel price was last hiked by 90 paisa a litre on May 11 after the companies skipped raising rates in April to avoid troubles for the government during the Budget session of Parliament. Petrol in Mumbai will cost Rs 70.68 a litre from Saturday as against Rs 69.73 currently, while diesel prices was raised by 62 paisa to Rs 56.66.

\"Prices of petrol were last revised downwards on May 1 by Rs 2.50 per litre (excluding state levies). The current increase is required mainly due to depreciation of rupee from Rs 54.26 to a US dollar to Rs 55.32 per USD,\" IOC said. Despite the fifth increase in diesel rates, oil firms are losing Rs 4.87 per litre on the nation\'s most consumed fuel.

\"In addition to diesel, oil marketing companies continue to suffer under-recovery (loss) on sale of kerosene of Rs 27.75 per litre and LPG of Rs 334.50 per cylinder,\" IOC said.

Reap maximum benefit from fish farming in the summer season

Ludhiana-31-May, 2013

Proper care and right knowledge is the key to reap maximum benefit from fish farming in the summer season. The views were expressed by Dr. Meera D. Ansal, college of fisheries of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. She emphasized that provide sufficient comfortable zone to your fish below the surface layer, which gets heated up far beyond optimum temperature range (28-320C). Maintain six feet water depth and to mitigate heating up of water; partial shading of pond with trees is also recommended.

Further, take care of the water quality. 'Oxygen' is the most important issue to be addressed, which may fall to lethal levels, especially during dawn, due to enhanced biological activity in the pond. Hence, aerate the ponds during early hours of the day before sunrise, either by adding fresh water or by aerators. High oxygen content will keep the fish healthy and increase its food converting efficiency. If the fish come on the surface to gasp atmospheric air, provide aeration and also suspend manuring and feeding of fish. Partial water exchange improves water quality. Nutrient rich pond water can be used to irrigate the agricultural fields and fresh water can be added in the fish ponds. It will improve water quality in the pond and reduce fertilizer requirement for the crop.

Farmers also need to check diurnal variation in water pH, which may cross 9.5 during peak day hours and fall below 7.5 during night hours, due to excessive growth of algal blooms in the pond. Algae also grow very fast during summers and nutrient enrichment leads to formation of algal blooms. Manuring/fertilization of pond shall be suspended in case water turns dark green, dark brown or greenish brown in colour and a green, brown or sometimes red coloured algal mat appears on the water surface. Regular bottom racking with the help of barbed wire is recommended to prevent accumulation of toxic gases like Ammonia and Carbon dioxide. Toxicity of Ammonia in fish ponds increases with increase in temperature and pH, which can be reduced by keeping the ponds well aerated and adding a dose of gypsum/alum as per expert advice. Increased input in terms of seed, feed and fertilizer is a strict 'NO'. It not only enhances input costs but also elevates the risk of failure.

It is also very important to sustain regular plankton (natural fish food) production in the pond and provide a nutritionally balanced supplementary diet. Keep the pond rich in plankton through mixed utilization of organic manures and inorganic fertilizers. Suspend feeding in case fish come to the surface for gasping atmospheric air or some kind of disease is observed in the fish.

Dr. Meera said that for disease management the golden rule is 'Prevention is better than Cure'. Follow recommended prophylactic measures with either lime, Potassium Permanganate or CIFAX. In case of disease occurrence, consult an expert for diagnosis and treatment.

Reliance SEZ figures revised upto 3.2% from 2.6%

1 Jun, 2013,NEW DELHI:--

The government has increased core sector numbers for previous years after incorporating refinery production data from Reliance Industries\' Special Economic Zone in Jamnagar. The annual growth in the eight core sector industries for 2012-13 was revised up to 3.2% from 2.6% reported earlier.

The most significant revision was in the April 2011 growth figure, which has increased to 5.7% now from 2.2% reported earlier.

ET had reported last month that core sector numbers were depressed because nearly 15% of refinery production was not getting captured in the data.

The Jamnagar refinery had processed a record 68.5 million tonnes of crude oil in 2012-13.

This is likely to slightly lift industrial production growth for the previous fiscal as the core sector contributes 38% to the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). IIP grew by just 1% last fiscal.

The fiscal year 2014 began on a muted note with the core sector expanding by just 2.3% in April against 3.2% in March, mainly because three of the eight sectors-crude oil, natural gas and fertilizers-recorded a fall in output. The low growth suggests a weak industrial production in the month.

Core sector grows a mere 2.3% in AprilENS Economic Bureau

New Delhi, Jun 01 2013:--

The combined output of eight core infrastructure industries grew by 2.3 per cent during the first month of the current fiscal, as against 5.7 per cent during the corresponding last year period, dragged down by a sluggish growth in steel and electricity and a contraction in sectors including crude oil and fertiliser.

According to the data released by the commerce ministry, the growth in the natural gas segment contracted 17.4 per cent while that of the crude oil declined 1.2 per cent during April in the current financial year. The growth in the fertiliser sector contracted 2.4 per cent, the data showed.

The eight core industries comprise coal, crude oil, natural gas, petroleum refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity, and have a weight of around 38 per cent in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).

Retail inflation for industrial workers has eased to 10.24 per cent in April compared 11.44 per cent in March this year mainly on account of decline in prices of petrol and mustard oil.

The retail inflation, measured in terms of Consumer Price Index-Industrial Workers, stood at 10.22 per cent in the corresponding month last year.

\"Food inflation stood at 12.39 per cent against 13.21 per cent of the previous month and 10.66 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year,\" the labour ministry said in a statement. PTI

Corporate houses should help in govt\'s push for development: President

May 31, 2013,Mumbai:--

President Pranab Mukherjee pitched for the involvement of the private sector in government\'s efforts to ensure economic growth and social welfare of the people of the country on Friday.

\"Government\'s efforts must be supplemented by the commitment of more resources by the corporate sector to development and social welfare activities,\" the President said at a function here. He also stressed that our foremost goal should be the revival of country\'s proud traditions in morality, ethics and social conduct.

\"Our nation\'s progress should not be hampered by the tarnishing of our national character or a weakening of the moral fibre of our society.

Government\\\'s efforts must be supplemented by the commitment of more resources by the corporate sector, said Pranab.

\"We seem to be losing our sense of right and wrong and good and bad as we pursue our respective short-term objectives.

\"As a result, not only is the greater public good being sacrificed, but even the private search for success and happiness is yielding short-lived, illusory and often counter-productive outcomes,\" the President said.

Mukherjee, who is on a two-day visit to Maharashtra, was speaking at the \'120th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda\'s historic voyage from Mumbai to the West to participate in the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago (1893)\' in the iconic convocation hall of Mumbai University.

Mukherjee said social reform constituted a key component of Swami Vivekananda\'s vision for modern India. Swamiji was uncompromising in his opposition to discrimination, deprivation and injustice on the grounds of caste, class and gender, he added.

\"Maharashtra has borne some of our nation\'s greatest social reformers. I would like to affirm on Friday that although the paths of these leaders of our society may have appeared to be outwardly divergent, their goals were essentially the same.

\"Swamiji\'s 150th birth anniversary celebrations should be an occasion for a constructive debate and cooperative action among the various sections striving for social reform,\" the President said.

Railway bribery case: Board chairman Vinay Mittal quizzed by CBI

May 31, 2013,New Delhi:--

CBI has recorded the statement of Chairman Railway Board Vinay Mittal in connection with the alleged bribery scandal involving former Railway Minister Pawan Bansal\'s nephew Vijay Singla and the then Board Member Mahesh Kumar.

CBI sources said Mittal was examined for nearly three hours on Thursday evening where he was asked about promotion of Mahesh Kumar from General Manager (West) to the Board and also about allowing him to retain additional charge of Western Railway even after his elevation.

The sources said Mittal is not an accused in the case registered by the agency on May 3 this year in which Singla and Kumar are the main accused.

Bansal had to resign as Union Railway Minister early this month after his nephew and a few other persons were arrested by CBI in a case involving alleged payment of bribe for fixing a top level Railway Board position.

The case relates to reported aspirations of Kumar for his elevation as Member (Electrical) in the Railway Board for which he allegedly contacted Goyal, a close associate of Singla. Goyal allegedly demanded Rs10 crore for it.

Kumar was in between elevated from GM (West) to Member (Staff) in Railway Board, a post which he was apparently not very interested in. He then allegedly asked Goyal to help him retain the additional charge of GM (West) for which the middleman demanded Rs two crore as immediate payment.

The agency alleged that a part payment of Rs 90 lakh was delivered to Singla after which it carried out searches at their premises and recovered the bribe amount.

CBI has so far arrested eight accused in the case.

IPL spot-fixing: Delhi Police make Rajasthan Royals\' player Siddharth Trivedi a witness

May 31, 2013,New Delhi:--

Rajasthan Royals player Siddharth Trivedi will be a prosecution witness in the IPL spot-fixing case in which three players of his team have been arrested.

Thirty-year-old Trivedi, a pacer, had refused to accept an invitation by Ajit Chandila, a player arrested on charges of spot-fixing, to attend a party arranged by bookies. He had also refused money and gifts offered by the bookies.

Investigators believe that Trivedi\'s deposition in the case will make their case stronger.

Chandila had approached Bradd Hodge and Kevin Cooper of Rajasthan Royals to attend the bookies\' party but they had also rejected the invitation.

The spot-fixing scandal broke out on May 16 when Delhi Police arrested three Rajasthan Royals players — Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankit Chavan — and bookies from Mumbai and Delhi for allegedly manipulating certain parts of matches.

A total of 26 people, including former players, have been arrested from various parts of the country since May 16.

Team India needs to get over the spot-fixing saga, focus on Champions Trophy:

Birmingham,May 31 2013:--

Indian cricketers face the daunting twin tasks of leaving behind the IPL spot-fixing scam and adapting to the tough conditions here as they begin their preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy with a warm-up game against Sri Lanka tomorrow.

Some on-field action will help divert the attention from the scandal, which has tarnished the reputation of Indian cricket. The conditions favour India\'s fast bowlers but they need to sort out their line and length. India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has already said that they will follow a five-bowler strategy.

India\'s success would hinge on how well the pacers exploit the conditions and there are a lot of expectations from the young Bhuvaneshwar Kumar who can swing the ball both ways.

Bhuvaneshwar has impressed in the limited opportunities he has got, especially against Pakistan in a home ODI series. Conditions would be ideal for his style of bowling and he would look to cement his place in the side with some solid performances.

Umesh Yadav, who has returned to the fold after recovering from an injury, could not get a better opportunity to force his way back in the side as the pitches in England will assist him.

Ishant Sharma also looks in good touch after being instrumental in his IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad\'s stupendous show. Dhoni may choose to go in with Irfan Pathan as his fourth paceman given that his batting skills would lend India\'s line-up more depth. It will be interesting to see how Dhoni uses Vinay Kumar, the other paceman.

Ravindra Jadeja would be a strong contender to fill in the lone spinner\'s spot. His batting prowess down the order makes him an automatic choice for the skipper. In that case, Ravichandran Ashwin and Amit Mishra may have to wait for a longer period to get a chance to roll their arms as the first six spots will be filled by batsman.

Shinde meets Sonia, apprises of actions in Chhattisgarh

New Delhi: 31 May 2013

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Thursday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and apprised her of the actions by the government in connection with May 25 Maoist attack on party leaders in Bastar.

In a clear signal of the party toughening its stand against Naxals, Congress spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das also endorsed Union Minister Jairam Ramesh\'s stand that the Maoists are terrorists.

\"I cannot ignore this view of Jairam Ramesh. This view has got some substance. We cannot ignore it,\" Das, who is also the AICC secretary for Chhattisgarh, said.

Ramesh had on Tuesday said, \"They are terrorists. What else are they? You can\'t romanticize them. They are spreading fear. They are spreading terror.\"

Reiterating his allegation that Maoists and BJP are closely working in Chhattisgarh to serve each other\'s purpose, Das questioned that if the state government can make comprehensive security plan for its Vikas Yatra, why can\'t it do the same for the Parivartan Yatra of Congress.

\"They should answer why this incident happened. This is the moral responsibility of the Chief Minister to quit his post,\" the Congress spokesperson said.

Delhi HC refuses to quash Neeraj Kumar’s appointment as police chief

New Delhi: 31 May 2013

Delhi High Court on Friday dismissed a plea challenging the appointment of Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar on the grounds of alleged abuse of power and violation of rights.

A division bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice Jayant Nath accepted the recommendations of Lieutenant Governor that Neeraj Kumar\'s ACR (annual confidential reports) records in his entire career were \"outstanding\".

The bench also accepted the home ministry\'s order - it had on May 28 rejected the petitioner\'s representation seeking quashing of Neeraj Kumar\'s appointment. The petitioner is MS Devasayam, a retired Indian Administrative Service officer from Chennai.

\"It is pointed out that as per the rules, the Lieutenant Governor has sent a panel of three names in order of preference for selection of commissioner of police, Delhi. The ACR records of Neeraj Kumar in his entire career are outstanding, and, therefore, the recommendation of the Lieutenant Governor was accepted.

He was also the senior most officer,\" the court said, accepting the Governor\'s recommendations. \"In view of the order of Home Ministry dated May 28, 2013, we see no reason to pass any orders in the writ petition. Same is dismissed.\"

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Rajeeve Mehra, appearing for the Home Ministry had earlier told the bench that the petitioner\'s representation was rejected by the Home Ministry on May 28.

The court had asked the former IAS officer to make a representation before the Home Ministry and directed the ministry to decide on it.

The ASG had earlier said the allegations against the commissioner had not been substantiated. \"There has been no lawlessness in the tenure of Neeraj Kumar. In fact, the comparative figures of crimes under major heads like dacoity, murder and kidnapping during his tenure in Delhi are lower than the corresponding period of last year,\" the ministry said.

The petitioner had said the police commissioner was facing serious allegations of misuse and abuse of power, fabrication of documents and violation of human rights.

Neeraj Kumar, a 1976-batch Indian Police Service officer, was appointed the police commissioner of the city in June 2012.

Rupee hits fresh 11-month low; may head towards 57

31 May, 2013,NEW DELHI:--

The rupee continues to reel under pressure for the fourth consecutive day, hitting a fresh 11-month low on Friday, after RBI governor\'s comments made yesterday dented rate cut hopes

The comment on Thursday pointed to the fact that inflation still remained high and expressed worry over the country\'s high current account deficit.

The sentiment turned bearish on concerns that the RBI may not cut rates at its next policy review meet in June.

The rupee was trading at 56.47/48 versus its close of 56.38/39 on Thursday after hitting as low as 56.60 in opening deals, its weakest since June 29, 2012, Reuters reported.

\"The rupee was seen continuously weakening against the US dollar in this week due to increased dollar demand in the local market,\" India Forex said in a report.

\"The rupee was seen posting losses hitting 10 month low on Thursday toward market close after the RBI comments dented the rate cut hopes,\" said the report. His comments sent the bond yields to a two-week high and the rupee to a 10-month low.

The rupee is currently on a free fall breaching the head and shoulder pattern at 55.20. Tracking the momentum, we see the rupee heading towards 57 levels soon, added the India Forex report.

Reacting to the weakness in rupee, Sensex plunged 300 points in mid-morning trade below 20000 levels and the 50-share Nifty index slipped below its crucial psychological level of 6050 in trade today.

At 10:30 a.m.; the S&P BSE Sensex was at 19957.36, down 258.04 points or 1.28 per cent. It touched a high of 20,191.29 and a low of 19,917.57 in early trade today.

The Nifty was at 6,042.35, down 81.70 points or 1.33 per cent. It touched a high of 6,106.25 and a low of 6,031.80 in trade today.

\"Rupee has been depreciating and that has been a little bit of a worry for the markets. While dollar has been strengthening against all currencies, rupee has probably weakened a little bit more,\" said Prasun Gajri, CIO, HDFC Life in an interview with ET Now.

According to analysts, weakness in domestic currency may hurt equity markets despite huge gush of liquidity by foreign institutional investors.

\"We should not ignore weakness in the Indian currency and that is one of the primary reasons why we are not positive on markets,\" said Dr Tirthankar Patnaik, Director, Strategist-Institutional Research, Religare Capital Markets in an interview with ET Now.

\"So the rupee and the markets can diverse for short periods of time but they have to go in tandem over the longish period,\" he added.

According to Patnaik, foreign investors with a weak currency have to get a double compensation not just for the equity premium of investing in a country like India but also what they loose on the local currency depreciation.

So unless rupee strongly improves or stay put around or below these levels, markets may come under profit booking at higher levels, say analysts.

Singur in the making: Will Maruti become Tata Motors in Gujarat?

May 31, 2013:--

Narendra Modi's political strategy may be working wonders for him, but definitely not his business strategy.

According to a report in the Business Standard, discontent is brewing in 44 villages covering 126,000 acres of land in the Mandal Becharaji belt, which has been notified as special investment region (SIR).

SIRs are similar to special economic zones, but units established here are not just export-oriented. Apart from commercial and industrial units, such regions can also house residential areas and offer logistic connectivity.

Is Gujarat a Singur in the making?

According to the report, Gujarat is the only state to have put in place an SIR Act.

The Mandal Becharaji belt was notified an SIR after Maruti Suzuki India decided to set up its plant here.

But now, 36 of the 44 gram sabhas in the region have passed a resolution opposing this notification as they feel their fertile land is being taken away to create an industrial hub, the BS report said.

"If the SIR plan is not called off, we will also oppose the Maruti plant coming up at Hansalpur," Ajmalbhai Thakore, village chief of Hansalpur, where Maruti is setting up its plant, has been quoted as saying in the report.

The opposition to the land use is not only in Hansalpur. Even in Vithlapur, where Maruti has acquired 700-800 acres of land, villagers are opposing the move, said the report.

Clearly, the simmering discontent against the widespread industrialisation in Gujarat is now coming to the fore.

There is also an irony in the government's move. Farmers in the region waited for many years for water from Narmada dam and their land is being acquired at a time when they were about get this water, the BS report said quoting former BJP rebel Kanu Kalsariya.

The issue, which is reminder of the Tata Motors troubles in West Bengal, is another proof that whoever be at the helm, Narendra Modi or Mamata Bannerjee or any from the Congress, the development debate remains the same: Should agricultural land be acquired for industrial use? How fair is it considering acquiring fertile land tantamount to robbing farmers' off their livelihood?

If the farmers in these Gujarat villages indeed up their ante, the key thing to watch out for will be how Modi, the politician, is dealing with the them. Will he use an iron hand or find a solution amicably. Whatever be his strategy, it is not going to be easy sailing for him.

CULTIVATE SOYBEAN FOR CROP DIVERSIFICATION: PAU EXPERTS

LUDHIANA, MAY 30:

"Soybean can replace the paddy crop and play an important role in crop diversification," said the experts of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Soybean is a major source of proteins (37-42%) and is rich in calcium and magnesium, they told, adding that it also contains nearly 21 per cent oil, and a lot of fibre. Growing of this crop in cereal based rotations also helps immensely in improving the soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic activity of rhizobia bacteria in its roots, they added. Sowing of soybean should be done in the first fortnight of June, advised the experts, adding that the varieties namely SL744 and SL525, recommended by the PAU, should be grown for higher yield.

Referring to the seed rate and seed treatment, Dr Navneet Aggarwal suggested that the seed rate of 25-30 kg/acre should be used for the sowing of the crop. Seed should be inoculated with recommended Rhizobium culture before sowing to enhance nitrogen fixation by the crop. The Rhizobium culture can be obtained from the Department of Microbiology, PAU, he told. Dr Aggarwal explained, "For inoculation, place the seed on a clean pucca floor or a polythene sheet, wet it with minimum quantity of water and mix one packet of Rhizobium culture. Dry the seed in shade and sow immediately. Seed should be treated simultaneously with Captan or Thiram @3g/kg of seed against soil-borne diseases."

Another expert, Dr Guriqbal Singh advised that the sowing of soybean should be done in good moisture conditions at the depth of 2.5-5 cm in lines 45 cm part with plant to plant spacing of 4-5 cm. Sowing of this crop on raised beds can save 20-30 per cent irrigation water, he informed. Soybean can be successfully intercropped with maize by sowing one line of the crop between the lines of maize spaced at 60 cm. Suggesting that mulch is helpful for soybean as it ensures proper germination and seedling emergence, he suggested the use of wheat or paddy straw as a mulch to cover the rows.

Dr B.S. Gill emphasized that the weeds must be controlled at proper time to get higher yield and that proper method for fertilizer application should be followed. The soybean crop requires about 3-4 irrigations depending upon the rainfall but irrigation at the time of pod-filling stage is very crucial, he added. Dr Gill told that the harvesting of crop should be done when the most of the leaves fall off and the colour of the pods changes. The delay in harvesting can cause shattering of pods, he said.

Beijing: 30 May 2013,

Rolling out the red carpet for Sri Lankan President Mahenda Rajapaksa, China has \"upgraded\" its ties with Colombo to a strategic cooperative partnership by consolidating cooperation in security and defence sectors.

Rajapaksa, who is increasingly turning to China to ward off pressure being mounted by the international community to probe human rights violations in the last stages of the civil war against LTTE in 2009 as well as devolve powers to the Tamil minority, held his first meeting with new Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

This is Rajapaksa\'s sixth visit to Beijing in recent years aimed at deepening relations with China, sparking concerns in India over the strategic tie-up. \"China and Sri Lanka agreed to upgrade their relations to a strategic cooperative partnership, as the presidents held talks in Beijing,\" media reported.

After the talks on Wednesday night, Xi and Rajapaksa signed a joint communiqué and attended the signing ceremony of a number of cooperative documents. Under the agreement, the two countries will consolidate cooperation in law enforcement, security and defence, it said without elaborating.

\"They vowed to jointly crack down on the \'three forces\' of terrorism, separatism and extremism, as well as transnational crimes and drug trafficking,\" the communiqué said. Recently, the China Development Bank had agreed to Colombo\'s request for USD 580 million loan for infrastructure development, taking its total commitments in the island nation to USD 1.4 billion.

The two countries agreed to support each other\'s efforts in safeguarding national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, media reported. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met Rajapaksa said the two sides need to strengthen cooperation in trade and investment, outline a bilateral economic cooperation plan, carry out discussions on a free trade area and activate a balanced trade in development.

Li also suggested the two sides strengthen infrastructure cooperation, implementing major projects on ports, railways and highways, expand pragmatic cooperation and research on aerospace and marine science, and broaden cooperation in culture, education and tourism. The two sides agreed to expand bilateral trade and investment, and accelerate trade facilitation as well as investment and financing cooperation and will cooperate more in the areas of agriculture and the application of space technology.

The two countries will now also beef up communication and coordination in international and regional affairs and will cooperate to cope with global challenges, such as climate change and non-traditional security threats, the communiqué said.

E-commerce firm Flipkart will close its music download service, Flyte, due to problems being faced by the firm such as music piracy and micro-payments.

Flyte, which was started over a year ago, allows people to download music at affordable prices. Flipkart claims that the service has about 1,00,000 customers.

When contacted, Flipkart Head (Digital Media and Payments) Mekin Maheshwari said, \"We set up Flyte MP3s a year back in what was an extremely nascent industry. The aim was to bring legal digital content to consumers in India.\"

In a short span of time Flyte built a massive digital music catalogue at very affordable prices along with a loyal base of nearly 100,000 customers, he added.

\"However, we have realized that the music downloads business in India will not reach scale unless several problem areas such as music piracy and easy micro-payments are solved in great depth.

The music download service is expected to shut shop from June.

Started in 2007, Flipkart sells movies, music, games, mobiles, cameras, computers, healthcare and personal products, home appliances and electronics among other items via its online platform.

IPL Spot-Fixing: Sports Ministry asks Srinivasan to step down

May 29, 2013,New Delhi:--

The pressure on BCCI chief Ministry N Srinivasan to resign kept mounting as the Ministry of Sports has asked him to step down on moral grounds.

"As there is a conflict on interest, Srinivasan should tender his resignation on moral grounds, pending the outcome of the inquiry," the Sports Ministry said in a press release.

\"The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is in favour of a law to curb malpractices in all sports. It will send its comments on the bill drafted by the Law Ministry, and is looking forward to working with the Law Ministry and other stakeholders for the development of a comprehensive law against match and spot-fixing,\" the statement read.

The Ministry, meanwhile, rejected reports that it was in favour of legalising betting to curb corruption in sports.

\"The Ministry of Sports has also observed that a section of the Media has reported that it is in favour of a law regularising betting in the sporting events in the country.

\"The Ministry clarifies that betting is a State Subject and cannot be part of a Central law. The Ministry has made no recommendations to regularise betting to the Law Ministry or to any other organisation,\" it said.

The press release came hours after IPL chairman and top BCCI functionary Rajeev Shukla said that he and Arun Jaitley have asked Srinivasan to step down as the BCCI president till probe, which looks into the alleged involvement of his son-in-law in betting and spot-fixing, is over .

He, however, made it clear that it is upto Srinivasan to decide whether he wants to quit or not as he is the elected president of the board.

Shukla, who met BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley today, also said that they would immediately act on the recommendations made by the three-member probe committee.

\"Findings of the commission will not be ratified by the

BCCI. It will be implemented straightaway\", Shukla told reporters.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India had on Tuesday constituted a three-man inquiry commission including two retired High Court judges to go into allegations against Gurunath Meiyappan — the son-in-law of BCCI chief N. Srinivasan — who has been arrested on charges of betting on IPL VI matches.

Justice T Jayaram Chouta, former Judge of the Karnataka and Madras High Courts, Justice R. Balasubramanian, former Judge of the Madras High Court, and BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale are members of the Commission, which will also go into the allegations against three players of the Rajasthan Royals team and its franchise as well as the Chennai Super Kings, of which Meiyappan was the Team Principal.

Earlier on Tuesday, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia became the first BCCI office-bearer to openly call for president N. Srinivasan's resignation in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal and said the Board should take entire responsibility for the fiasco.

While Scindia wanted Srinivasan to stay out of office until after the case of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was decided, another Union Minister and senior Board functionary Farooq Abdullah said there was no reason for the beleaguered president to quit.

Meanwhile, a defiant and combative BCCI President N Srinivasan, who decided to hang on to his position despite the IPL spot-fixing scandal, had on Monday said his resignation is being sought only by a \"hounding media\".

Srinivasan, whose son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings CEO Gurunath Meiyappan has been arrested for alleged involvement in betting, were booed by the Eden Gardens\' crowd during the presentation ceremony of the IPL 6 final on Sunday.

Making use of football to impart life skills

May 29, 2013,Bangalore :--

There's something about football that makes it larger than just a sport. "All that I know most surely about morality and obligations, I owe to football," Albert Camus had said.

While countless greats have rhapsodised about football, in Bangalore the game doesn't yet invoke fervour enough, 20-year-old engineering student Tejas felt that strongly enough to push for change. How? By preparing a complete football curriculum for children, conducting workshops, and teaching children how to play the game.

Tejas's football workshops start from the basics like tying the shoelaces to warm-ups, strategic drills, ball control, shooting, game plan and cool downs. Besides the game, they also learn important life skills. "Football will make one think deeply, be creative and brave. It will build confidence, teach you trust and lead," Tejas says.

In the last six months, he has conducted several workshops at schools and sports academies and created over 60 football enthusiasts.

Tejas's affair with the football began 11 years ago at St Joseph's Indian High School. "I used to get to the grounds before 7 am just to watch the older students play football. I was the ball boy who fetches the ball if it gets kicked out of the field, until one day the coach asked me to join in for a game," Tejas recalls.

He soon found a place in the school team. "My coach started taking me for big tournaments. I made it to the state under-12 team, and won many prizes." Later, he became the captain of his college team, made it to the state team and bagged several trophies. He was doing his degree in electrical engineering at RNSIT, Bangalore, when he was compelled to revisit football from another angle.

The turning point for Tejas was a game India played against FC Bayern Munich."The national team lost badly. I was ashamed. I wanted to change the scene."

He thought of how to make a difference and decided to start by coaching school children. He hunted grounds where children played. He studied their game, took copious notes, and prepared a football curriculum before approaching sports academies and school, which let him teach.

"At the workshops and camps, I start with a lot of fun drills, then go to basics. I keep in touch with all the students even after the workshop. I organise matches between teams and get the kids to hone their skills regularly," he says.

Recently, Tejas taught a bunch of students older than him at the CV Raman Research Institute and later pitched them against students of Shibumi school, where he had conducted a camp earlier.

Tejas has been learning too. "On the ground, to win you have to play as a team, pass the ball, and trust your teammate. I learnt that the best way to teach is to guide while letting the other person makes mistakes and learn."

The TRS president called upon the people of the region to expose "the true colours" of the TDP by organising 'darbars' in all villages. He wanted to know whether a person from Telangana would be given a high post such as Chief Minister, party president, floor leader or Speaker in the event of the TDP coming to power.

Similarly, the YSR Congress also would not allow a Telangana leader to become party president or occupy important posts, he said and added that the Congress was following in their footsteps and meting out a raw deal to Telangana Congress leaders.

He alleged that Seemandhra parties were enjoying power at the cost of their Telangana counterparts. "Can we allow this situation to continue by remaining in united Andhra Pradesh?" he asked amid cheers. He called upon the people to elect only TRS candidates from all the Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in the coming elections to realise their dream of living with self-respect in the separate State.

Flaying Telangana Congress leaders for remaining silent when Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said he would not allocate single paise to the region in the Assembly, he wondered whether they deserved to be re-elected. Reiterating that a Dalit would be made CM in Telangana state, he said no force could stop the formation of separate State.

SEMINAR ON DIRECT SEEDED RICE ORGANISED AT PAU

LUDHIANA, MAY 28:

A state level seminar on "Direct Seeded Rice: Prospects and Challenges" was organized by the Department of Agronomy of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) here today. Farmers from across the Punjab state, and scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Farm Advisory Service Scheme (FASS), and various parts of the country participated in the seminar. Dr P.K. Khanna, PAU Registrar, was also present on this occasion.

In his remarks, Dr M.S. Gill, Director of Extension Education, said that rice is a staple food of the country. "Nearly 40 million hectare area in India is under paddy," he divulged, saying that the demand for this major crop is increasing in view of the burgeoning population. Stating that the direct seeded rice (DSR) technology holds great relevance, Dr Gill emphasized that the adoption of new farm technologies is vital for ensuring food security and agri-sustainability. He informed that the trainings, jointly organized by the Punjab Agricultural University and the State Department of Agriculture on direct seeding methodology have created a great impact on the farmers of the Punjab. Dr Gill advised the participating farmers to contact the University experts at KVKs and FASS, located in different parts of the state, for gaining knowledge about the technological components of DSR.

Dr Gursharan Singh, Dean, Postgraduate Studies, appreciated the efforts of the organizers in the organization of the much needed seminar. Presenting an overview of the postgraduate teaching, he said that the technical guidance on the application of agro-chemicals, maintenance of soil health, water conservation technologies, and production and protection technologies is imparted to the students through various academic programmes of the University.

Speaking on the current status and prospects of DSR in Punjab, Dr H.S. Dhaliwal, Dean, College of Agriculture, pointed out that paddy is a water demanding crop. There is a lot of scope of DSR technology as it is water and labour saving, he said, while calling upon the rice growers to adopt this methodology to reduce their cost of cultivation.

Highlighting the research priorities of the PAU, Dr J.S. Dhiman, Additional Director of Research (Natural Resource and Plant Health Management), said that the University is focusing on farm diversification, natural resource conservation, farm mechanization, paddy straw management, economic upliftment of the small farmers, and evolvement of crop varieties using less water. He observed that in view of the water concerns of the state, DSR methodology can play a key role in water conservation.

Dr Gurjeet Gill, Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) Project leader, University of Adelaide, Australia, pointed out that declining labour availability, rising labour costs, declining water table, and deteriorating soil health are the issues being faced in the rice production. Referring to direct seeding method, he said that it is labour saving and leads to improved productivity. Weed management is a major challenge in DSR, he told, adding that there are effective herbicides available for use in this technology. "Basmati is an ideal option for DSR because of its optimum sowing time," he said.

Earlier, Dr G.S. Buttar, Head of Agronomy Department, welcomed the dignitaries and the participants. He highlighted that DSR technology has gained wider acceptance among the farmers of Bathinda, Moga, Muktsar and Faridkot districts. The seminar aims at gathering feedback from the farmers and promoting the DSR method in other parts of the state, he added.

On this occasion, the dignitaries released two publications on DSR. A technical session was held wherein the experts deliberated on agronomy of DSR, current status of DSR technology in Haryana, and crop establishment and weed management in DSR. Besides, feedback from national level ACIAR training workshop on DSR was also gathered. Dr Dhiman chaired the session whereas Dr G. Gill co-chaired the session.

Dr S.S. Walia, PAU Agronomist, highlighted the significance of direct seeding technology and proposed the vote of thanks.

Saif and Jimmy taste prison food for goodluck

Mumbai,May 28, 2013:--

If you eat jail food, you will never get into trouble and will be able to with stand anything,\"translates a popular Hindi phrase. While this may not have many takers, Jimmy Shergill certainly seems to live by it.

And so it was that the actor, who had missed out on an opportunity to sample prison food on another occasion, grabbed the chance with both hands during the filming of Tigmanshu Dhulia\'s Bullett Raja in Nashik Jail. What\'s more, heeven got Saif Ali Khan,Tigmanshu and producer Rahul Mittra to join the feast.

A source present during the shoot told TOI how it all panned out. \"As soon as Jimmy entered the jail, he started preparing for what marked his first shoot with Saif. Soon, it was lunch time and he casually asked about the menu. While he was given some lavish options and Tigmanshu even suggested they all step out for lunch, he kept asking about the food in jail.\"

Saif and Rahul were rather curious about his request at which point he explained why he was so keen on the jail food. To which, Rahul asked him, \"Are you serious?\" and Jimmy proceeded to give a rather long explanation. Forty-five minutes into Jimmy\'s lecture and Saif, Tigmanshu and Rahul too were hooked.

\"The food prepared by the inmates was indeed served to the foursome and they all ate together. Interestingly, no one complained and the idea of eating out was dropped altogether,\" said the source.

And in case you are wondering, it was a simple meal of chana and chapatti served to them...

Shahid\'s mom Neelima accused of cheating

May 28, 2013,MUMBAI:--

Neelima Azim finds herself drawn to the middle of a controversy. After producer Rajesh Vyas filing a complaint against the actress recently, a criminal case has apparently been registered against Neelima for alleged criminal intimidation, cheating and criminal breach of trust.

According to Vyas' advocate Neeraj Gupta, Neelima had signed a contract with the producer's company in 2009 to direct a film and also apparently took a signing amount, only to later avoid their calls and refusing to return the signing amount.

Gupta states, "Neelima had signed a contract with Bysscope Production and had taken a signing amount of R 15 lakh and another R 2 lakh thereafter. She had promised the production house that she would sign Priyanka Chopra and Emraan Hashmi for the film. Later citing date problems, she said she would get Shahid Kapoor."

The advocate adds, "My client has filed a case against her and she has to appear in the court on June 2."

Neelima however has a different version of the episode. She says, "I have not received any letter from the court yet. I did sign a contract with the production house and they paid me only R 12 lakh. I worked for them for six months but they wanted big stars for the film. In fact, I also spoke to Sonu Sood and Jimmy Shergill and they were ready to do the film also but Vyas wanted big stars like Emraan and Priyanka."

The actress feels the other party should have settled the matter amicably. "I would have retained the amount I needed to be paid for six months while returning the rest. But they didn't talk to me even once. I will ask my lawyer to follow up with them," she adds.

Accident-prone Shah Rukh Khan is set to go in for surgery once again this month. Shah Rukh had hurt his shoulder while shooting for RA.One in 2010. Although he underwent treatment back then, his condition did not improve entirely.

Despite the pain, Shah Rukh apparently finished shooting for the Rohit Shetty film on May 25 in Hyderabad. The last schedule even included an action sequence.

"SRK will be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days. Then he will rest at home for some time till the shoulder heals," adds the family friend. Though the star has already started promoting Chennai Express, he is expected to join the team for on-ground activities by mid-June.

In a recent news report, the actor was quoted saying, "I was shooting my film and am injured too…I wanted to complete the movie (sic)." According to other reports, he has previously broken three ribs, twisted his ankle, fractured his right toe, and suffered a neck, back and knee injury.

May 27, 2013, Mumbai:--

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, who was convicted in the 1993 blasts case and is presently lodged at Yerawada jail, will spend the 42 months of his sentence making paper files and doing paper-binding work.

The jail authorities have decided to assign Dutt the task of making paper files because they do not want him to mingle with other inmates in the jail for security reasons. Dutt will undertake this task inside his cell in Maximum Security Enclosure 3.

The actor, who surrendered after the Supreme Court denied relief to him, was shifted from Arthur Road jail to Yerawada jail amidst secrecy on Wednesday.

The last time Dutt was in jail, he was assigned the work of making knitting yarn cane chairs, and one such chair made by him was auctioned after he was released on bail.

Speaking to dna, a senior state jail officer, on condition of anonymity, said, "The last time when Dutt was in Yerawada jail, he was given the task of making cane chairs. However, this time, he will not be given the same task. We are thinking of giving him another indoor job so that he does not mingle with the other inmates."

According to the procedure, counsellors analyse an inmate's strengths and weaknesses, apart from his or her skills, and accordingly assign work to him or her.

"The convicts are paid wages varying from Rs25 to Rs40 on the completion of the assigned job. Besides, they are also rewarded with a remission in punishment for good work and good conduct," the officer added.

Ranbir-Katrina dance at Karan Johar’s party

Mumbai,May 27, 2013:--

When Manmohan Shetty\'s daughter Pooja Shetty threw a party for Karan Johar\'s 41st birthday at her Juhu residence, it was meant to be a private affair - which in Bollywood-speak means for closest buddies.

The party began at 9 pm, and had the guests grooving to Badtameez Dil and Balam Pichkari till late night. The first to arrive was Kajol (minus hubby Ajay Devgn) and other guests included Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif (who came in the same car and were dancing together as well), Deepika Padukone (who gave the lovebirds a wide berth), Parineeti Chopra and Ranveer Singh (the only ones who posed for shutterbugs), Anurag Kashyap and Kalki Koechlin (who seemed colour coordinated), Malaika Arora, Chunky Pandey, to name a few.

Interestingly, though their better halves were there, Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan were conspicuous by their absence. As were Rani Mukerji and Priyanka Chopra. Akshay Kumar came, wished and left. Sohail Khan, who is rarely seen partying outside his own circle, also turned up. Aamir Khan, revealed a guest, came in shorts and slippers.

\"The highlight of the party was the music and the food,\" a guest revealed. \"Pooja Shetty took such good care of all the guests. And from the outside, no one would come to know that there is a party happening. It was well guarded. Thankfully, no cops turned up!\"

Shah Rukh Khan\'s team Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL last year. Admitting that he takes Kolkata Knight Riders\' defeats \"personally\", superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Sunday stressed that the Indian Premier League(IPL) matches have been a learning experience for him and his children.

\"I got to learn a lot (from IPL)...to learn how to lose but not become losers. My children have also learnt a lot.

\"They haven\'t learnt that much from my profession. But this completely uncontrolled, unbridled excitement, ups and downs and not knowing what\'s happening has taught them to be better people. So I thank IPL,\" Shah Rukh told a TV channel while promoting his forthcoming release Chennai Express.

Conceding to missing most of his team\'s matches in the series, he said he has to juggle with the entertainment aspect in both cricket and films.

\"I couldn\'t come (to Eden Gardens). I was shooting my film and am injured too...I wanted to complete the movie.. I had a choice though. People would have been happy anyway watching the league matches, whether I am present or absent.

The Bollywood baadshah admitted feeling \"really sad\" when his team, KKR, does not perform to expectations.

\"I missed all the matches...specially we didn\'t make it to the play offs. We are the defending champions. When my team was not doing well, I feel really sad. I take it personally in terms of my emotions...in terms of my children because I feel their life\'s learnings are through this IPL,\" he said.

Of the 16 IPL matches KKR played, the team won six and lost 10, thereby ruining its chances of qualifying for the play-offs this season.

The East Bengal gaffer speaks on a plethora of topics and is pleased on being nominated by the FPAI in the coach of the year award category…

23-May-2013 :--

How many coaches have survived for a couple of seasons at Kolkata clubs? Amongst the handful, Trevor James Morgan is the illustrious one given the success and more importantly, a sense of calm – something which has never been associated with a club from the east.

Nominated for the Football Players Association of India (FPAI) in the coach of the year category as part of their annual Indian Football Awards, the 56-year old is set to end his sojourn in Indian football.

In an exclusive interview with Goal, the Englishman states that he has no regrets and has been successful in his efforts to make East Bengal one of the top three clubs in the country.

Goal: How happy are you at being nominated for the Coach of the Year award again? Do you think you can win it for a second time on the trot? Your thoughts on your fellow nominees?

Trevor Morgan: It is always very pleasing to be nominated as it comes from the players of the teams we compete against, it is the third year on the trot for me and there are some very deserving nominees who have had great seasons but at different levels, Arthur (Papas) and Santosh (Kashyap) did brilliantly with inexperienced players and low budgets, Derrick (Pereira) made Pune FC a formidable outfit and Subash (Bhowmick) won the league. I am happy to be nominated and whoever wins it will be fully deserving of it

How content are you with East Bengal\'s just concluded I-League campaign? Is it disappointing, that you missed out on the title again?

It\'s disappointing but not something that worries me. Our team has become very consistent with almost identical win loss and draws over the past three years. When you play as many games as we do, it is impossible for everyone to be at the top of their game regularly. Picking up points when the team is maybe not playing well is something we were not able to do in the run in and the three drawn games versus Air India, Prayag United and Sporting Clube de Goa proved costly as Churchill Brothers also dropped points but we were unable to narrow the gap.

Now that the season is over, when you look back, what is it that you would have liked to do differently, which you think might have had a positive impact on the club\'s fortunes?

I think we have to prioritise and look at how many competitions we play in but that will always difficult at East Bengal as the History of the club and our fan base demand that we are competitive and play to win in every game. It will be an ongoing problem as I can see no way out of it.

The club has looked formidable in their AFC Cup outings. How far do you think this team can go in the continental tournament?

We have had a far better balance to the team in the AFC Cup as we are able to field an extra foreigner. I don\'t think Andrew (Barisic) has had the credit he deserves as everyone looks at who scores the goals but his unselfish play has enabled Chidi Edeh and Penn Orji to operate very effectively. If we are drawn against a team from this region I would say we have a great chance to make the semi finals but the teams from the Middle East are a different proposition and very difficult opponents. But who knows in football what will happen.

Do you think these AFC Cup games have maybe affected the team\'s performance in the I-League? As they have looked lethal in the AFC Cup, while their form in the business end of the season in the league was not as good?

No not at all, as I have said above having four foreigners in the AFC has been great but we slipped up in games that I feel were there for the taking towards the end. There is nothing you can do however when human error comes in to it and we did suffer from that this season.

How satisfied are you at the end of your stay with East Bengal? Any memories in particular that you really look back at, with pride? Any regrets?

I am very happy with the progress the team has made during the past three seasons, we have become one the top teams in India and have tried to do it the right way. The players have been tremendous from the first training session onwards and many of them will I hope long and successful careers ahead of them, and no, no regrets, sometimes I ve got things wrong but I learned from it and moved on.

Will we see you again in a coaching capacity in India, in the future? Also will you be taking a complete sabbatical from football, next season?

Whether or not I come to India again will be the decision of someone else, it will be dependant if someone wants me or not, so I can\'t honestly answer that question. As regards my own future and what I do next season, it will be a lot clearer after our final game versus Mohun Bagan
