Regularization falls flat in Ludhiana

LUDHIANA: The regularization of illegal colonies scheme of the state government has received a tepid response, with the Ludhiana municipal corporation (MC) getting only 55 applications from 308 unauthorized colonies and 12,000 out of more than 1 lakh unauthorized plots in the city.

The drive was started a few months back, after which the civic body started a series of awareness campaigns. The MC had expected it would earn regularization fee in crores through the registration process, money that would be used for the development of the city.

Isha Kalia, additional commissioner, MC said as the state government was charging nominal fee for registering of unauthorised plots and colonies, people should come forward in large number so that their unauthorised colonies and plots that were so far not getting basic amenities could get all the facilities.

\"We are charging very nominal fee for regularisation and residents should understand that later they would be penalized for not registering their illegal colonies and plots. Sewerage, electricity and water connection in these colonies would be disconnected if they do not submit regularization fee on time.\"

Kamaljeet Kaur, assistant town planner (headquarters), said residents were taking regulation policy lightly as a result of which MC has received only a few applications.

The last date for submission of fee with penalty was November 15.
