Fake registry scam busted

LUDHIANA: In a case that could have major implications for the city, police have busted a gang involved in making fake registries to usurp properties of city residents and NRIs. They were also used by companies to take multiple loans on the same property.

A special investigation team has been formed to identify 150 fake registries gang members have confessed to have prepared and used. Police commissioner Paramjit Singh Gill said additional deputy commissioner of police Swapan Sharma and his team zeroed in on the gang involved in making fake registries by scanning original ones from the revenue records department. \"This is a big achievement as the accused have confessed to having forged and fabricated 150 registries to usurp plots of innocent residents, particularly NRIs. As investigation continues and the case unfolds, many big companies in the city will be exposed,\" said Gill.

Police commissioner Paramjit Singh Gill said Rajiv Aggarwal, alias Bittu, an Amritsar resident who had been living in Friends colony, Chander Nagar was the gang leader. Bittu was involved in forging documents of vehicles in Pathankot to get details of properties belonging to NRIs or properties lying vacant for a long time. After doing this in collusion with Balbir Singh, a clerk and record keeper in the office of the sub-registrar, Ludhiana east, he would get original registries of these properties and scan them to prepare fake registries using fake stamps.

Kamal Krishan Jaiswal alias Mochi, a resident of Ghumar Mandi used to forge signatures on the registries. These were used for two major purposes, to usurp lands as old registries in such cases were destroyed and were then replaced with originals in the record room to be sold to clueless buyers. Secondly, they were used by big companies that had pledged their properties for loans as a fake registry could be used to take multiple loans on the same property.

Police sources said the accused used to charge Rs 1 lakh for one fake registry. Police have arrested four accused, Rajiv Aggarwal alias Bittu, Kamal Krishan Jaiswal alias Mochi, Gurinder Singh alias Gaggi and Sonu. Clerk Balbir Singh is yet to be arrested.
