City Briefs: 42.5 quintals of poppy husk seized





LUDHIANA: The Ludhiana police on Thursday seized 42.5 quintal poppy husk from a canter parked near the military camp, Dholewal chowk. The canter had been parked for the past few days and when police checked the vehicle, they found 115 bags of poppy husk weighing 42.5 quintals. Police Commissioner P S Gill said the market value of the poppy husk was Rs 15 lakh.







LUDHIANA: Ved Prachar Mandal on Thursday organised a free medical check-up camp at community centre, Model Gram, where more than 200 children were examined for dental and eye-related problems. General check-up was also done. MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu inaugurated the camp along with his councillor wife Mamta Ashu. Roshan Lal Arya, general secretary of Mandal, was present on the occasion.



City boy wins gold in weightlifting



LUDHIANA: Ajay Kumar, a student of Kamla Lohtia S D College, bagged gold medal in 62 kg category in weightlifting. He won the medal for lifting a total of 207 kg (snatch: 95 kg; clean and jerk: 112 kg) at the 9th State Youth Weightlifting Championship held at Sunam in Sangrur.







LUDHIANA: The three-day PTU Youth Fest concluded at GGNIMT on Thursday evening. Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria inaugurated the third day of the fest. Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College (BBSBEC), Fategarh Sahib, walked away with the overall trophy for the best performance in the fest.







LUDHIANA: R C Jain Innovative Public Senior Secondary School on Thursday held a unique function at which schoolchildren broke piggy banks to help slum kids on Diwali. The school runs community project `Udaan\' wherein 75 children from the slum area are brought to school in the school bus. They are given free education, uniforms and books and as they start being regular, they are brought into the mainstream. All expenses are met with voluntary donations and contributions.
