Supreme Court issues notice to Centre, Tamil Nadu government over harassment of fishermen by Sri Lanka

New Delhi: Concerned with the harassment of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka, the Supreme Court today issued a notice to the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government on a petition, which seeks protection of the fishermen from the Sri Lankan Navy.

Two of Tamil Nadu\'s biggest rival parties, M Karunanidhi\'s DMK and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa\'s AIADMK, have come together on the issue and had filed the petition, seeking interference by the Supreme Court over the harassment of the state\'s fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy.

\"Fortunately we are happy all political members from Tamil Nadu are united and have joined in this issue,\" Chief Justice of India Justice P Sathasivam, who is from Tamil Nadu, said today.

The petition, filed by AIADMK MP Thambidurai and DMK MP AKS Vijayan, says that the Centre should protect the lives of fishermen, who are harassed and killed by the Sri Lankan navy.

\"Is it not possible to solve this diplomatically and politically,\" the Supreme Court asked the Centre.

The Supreme Court has sought the responses from the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government in four weeks.
