One dead, scores hurt in Bangladesh strike

DHAKA: Police opened fire on stone-throwing opposition activists, leaving one man dead and several others injured in southwestern Bangladesh as opposition parties try to enforce a nationwide general strike.

The protest on Sunday is aimed at forcing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to quit and form a caretaker government made up of people from outside political parties to oversee an election due by early next year.

Local police official Abul Kalam says police were forced to open fire after opposition activists attacked them in Faridpur district.

He says at least six others have been injured in the area, while television stations say similar violence has left scores hurt across the country since Saturday.

Hasina has proposed forming an all-party government, but opposition has rejected that. The shutdown is to continue until Tuesd
