Manna Dey\'s bond with Ludhiana

LUDHIANA: \"Laga chunri mein daag\" and \"Ai meri zohra zabeen\", the songs which became a hallmark of Manna Dey\"s versatility, were actually penned by Ludhiana son Sahir Ludhianvi.

As the legendary singer bid the final goodbye at the age of 94 on Thursday, city residents shared their grief.

\"I have a dim memory of the year 1962 when I was studying in class IV and Manna Dey had come with some actors at Gymkhana ground for collecting funds for defense forces,\" said Ravindra Vatsyayan, a city resident. \"He struck a chord with everyone with his melodious voice. He inspired generations of singers not only with his singing, but also his conduct,\" he added.

Sanjeev Hans, who has grown up singing the songs of Manna Dey, said, \"I was telling my daughter Shreya in the morning only as to how I used to sing Manna Dey\"s patriotic song \"Aie mere pyare watan\" from movie Kabuliwala in my school days. He had a special bonding with Punjabis and Ludhianvis because of his songs in a Punjabi movie \"Nanak Nam Jahaza Hai\" and the songs written by Sahir Ludhianvi.\"
