Rural pharmacists seek regularisation

Members of the Rural Health Pharmacist Action Committee on Saturday submitted a memorandum to chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to demand regularisation of jobs and disbursement of pending salaries of two months.

A total of 1,186 pharmacists in the state are agitating against the state government for "not fulfilling their demands".

There are 107 health pharmacists working at rural dispensaries in Ludhiana district. These pharmacists claim to be getting very low salaries for the past seven years. They blamed that despite getting assurances by state government, their demands were not completed.

"On Saturday, we gave a memorandum to the chief minister at Malwa College Bondli, Samrala. We have demanded from chief minister to regularise our jobs and to issue our pending salaries of two months," said Gurmeet Singh Kulewal, convener, Rural Health Pharmacist Action Committee, Punjab.

"The chief minister has assured us to organise a meeting on this matter soon. We have been working on low salaries for the past seven years, but nobody is listening to our voice. We had decided to stage protest during the CM\'s visit to Samrala, but the administration helped our delegation could meet the chief minister," he added.

"Earlier, the government had also announced to regularise the pharmacists by keeping some conditions under which around 400 health pharmacists were not eligible but we denied that proposal. We are also demanding to increase the salaries and regularisation of jobs of class four employees at rural dispensaries as they are given Rs. 3,000 only per month," Kulewal added.

Ram Singh, another convener from Patiala, said, "Our two months\' salaries are still pending. We are also demanding from government to release salaries."

He said, "We have been working since 2006, but salary is just Rs. 7,000 per month. The government had promised us to increase our salaries, but nothing has been done so far."
