GADVASU Organizes Dairy and Fisheries Officers Workshop

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized a one day workshop for Dairy and Fisheries Officers of the State, today on August 12, 2013. Dr. G. Vajralingam, Financial commissioner, Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries was the chief guest and Dr VK Taneja, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU presided over the function. During his inaugural address Mr Vajralingam revealed the appreciating role of livestock sector in food security, employment generation, asset creation, financial security in the current scenario of Punjab's agriculture economy. He further said that Punjab govt. is doing its best to uplift this sector further and every required support will be provided to meet the challenges. Dr Taneja in his presidential remarks said that this workshop was held with the objective to create an interface for exchange of knowledge, ideas and challenges to develop mutual dialogue between university scientists and field officers those were working at grass root level. Dr Taneja further emphasized the need of strengthening of veterinary extension, which is back bone component to disseminate the scientific technologies to the farmers which are the end users. He said that major challenges of dairy sector are reproductive disorder and nutrition. The pricing mechanism of milk needs to include more inputs. Dr. Taneja revealed that in fisheries sector we are working on high value fish. There is a huge potential in this area. Sh Inderjeet Singh, Director, Dairy Development said that we should learn from developed dairy nations like Israel e.g. their housing system for animals. He said that farmer should work on value addition of products. Mr. B.K.Sood Director cum Warden, Department of fisheries said that there is more need to work on saline water fisheries. Farmers should come forward to work on ornamental fisheries and Eco tourism. A compendium of technical lectures was also released by the dignitaries.

Dr R S Sahota, Director of Extension Education, GADVASU welcomed the delegates and highlighted the university's extension programmes. Dr SNS Randhawa, Director Research, Dr. P.D. Juyal Registrar Dr H S Sandhu, Dean College of Veterinary Science, DR SPS Sangha, Dean College of Dairy Science, Dr. Asha Dhawan, Dean College of Fisheries GADVASU were also there to grace the occasion.

Dr HK Verma, coordinator proposed the vote of thanks and informed that different technical sessions were held to update the knowledge of officers of the dairy and fisheries departments. At last a joint plenary session was conducted for working out the recommendations which will be helpful in planning the future strategies in livestock sector of the state. He further said that more than 200 delegates from all over the Punjab attended the workshop.
