Congress High command must intervene: Sudheeran





Senior Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran, on Thursday, urged the party high command to intervene urgently and settle issues related to the Congress and the United Democratic Front (UDF) to improve the image of the party and the coalition ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.



The emphasis of Mr. Sudheeran's discussions with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, when he met them at separate meetings on Thursday, was on the need for a change in the functioning styles of the State leadership, with more involvement of the party in policy formulation through discussions at the appropriate forums. He pointed out lapses in the functioning of the government, and suggested corrective steps.



Mr. Sudheeran is understood to have pointed out the lack of proper discussions on policy and administrative issues despite having a party-government coordination committee in place.



The party committees were not being convened regularly. There was hardly any collective decision-making. He had pointed out lapses in functioning styles many times, but was not heeded. The latest was his opinion on ordering a judicial inquiry into the solar scam. The government would have been in a better position if it had not delayed ordering such an investigation.



Mr. Sudheeran touched upon factionalism in the party State unit. Several leaders with a good track-record were still waiting for a break. The image of the party and the coalition was in a trough. He wanted the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to bestow more attention to problems and nip them in the bud.



Mr. Sudheeran is understood to have taken the stand that unity in the Congress would help bridle the ambitions of UDF partners. AICC sources said that Mr. Sudheeran had opposed suggestions to appease the Kerala Congress(M) and the Indian Union Muslim League by giving in to some of their demands in view of the imperatives of winning the maximum number of seats in the Lok Sabha elections.



He had a 30-minute meeting with Ms. Gandhi and an hour-long meeting with Mr. Gandhi, who had invited him to Delhi to share his views on revamping the party.
