Shashi Kant Sharma’s appointment as CAG challenged in Supreme Court

New Delhi: 03 Jun 2013

The appointment of Shashi Kant Sharma as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India was on Monday challenged in the Supreme Court.

BJP slams appointment of Sharma as CAG

The PIL was filed by eminent lawyer Prashant Bhushan on behalf of nine petitioners including former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N Gopalswami, former Navy Chiefs Admiral (retired) RH Tahiliani and Admiral (retired) Ramdas, former deputy CAG BP Mathur and 3 other retired IAS officers.

The PIL stated that Sharma\'s appointment was arbitrary, opaque and made without any procedure. It contended that Sharma\'s appointment as CAG rakes up a debate over conflict of interest since he would be entrusted the task of auditing the defence deals between 2003 and 2010 - the time during which he was in the Defence Ministry.

Sharma spent over ten years in the Defence Ministry during which high profile and controversial deals were finalised including the VVIP Chopper agreement between the government and an Italian company AgustaWestland.
