20-year-old held for Audi accident

Jun 4, 2013, Bangalore :--

Police have identified the accused as Rajesh L Reddy, a 3rd-year BBM student at Christ College and a resident of CV Raman Nagar. He is the second son of businessman Lokesh Reddy.

The horrific accident — which saw the autorickshaw toppling thrice due to the force of the impact — claimed the life of 20-year-old Deepak, while his friend Karthik and the auto driver Younus Ali were critically injured.

It was a day of drama at the Ashok Nagar traffic police station. While additional commissioner of police (traffic) MA Saleem said police had decided to registered a case against the accused under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as Rajesh had fled the scene after the accident and for speeding, Rajesh's father was seen requesting police not to book his son saying he was bright boy who wanted to pursue his higher studies in London.

Police have handing over the case and the accused to the Ashok Nagar police station (law and order police) for further investigation and also registered a fresh case (crime number 390/2013) against Rajesh under the provision of section 304 which is a non-bailable offence. Police on Sunday had registered a case under the provision of section 304a (death due to negligence) of the IPC.

Police investigation revealed that the newly bought car was a birthday gift from Rajesh's father to his mother, Prema Reddy. Investigation has revealed that the Audi was speeding at more than 120kmph when it hit the autorickshaw around 2 am on Sunday.

Rajesh's driver reportedly was sitting next to him, while his two friends, identified as Prithvi and Nikhil, were sitting on the rear seats. All of them allegedly were under the influence of alcohol.

According to police, Rajesh had confessed to driving under the influence of alcohol and also said that he fled the scene out of fear with his friends. He told police that he had come to purchase food for his mother Prema Reddy's birthday. But Rajesh's father contested police version saying that his driver was at the wheel and not his son.
