Varun Gandhi hate speech case: Sting says witnesses forced to turn hostile

New Delhi, Thu May 16 2013:--

BJP general secretary Varun Gandhi has found himself at the centre of a sting operation carried out by Tehelka and Headlines Today. The sting claims local administration and a member of the ruling SP in Uttar Pradesh orchestrated witnesses to turn hostile to facilitate Varun\'s exoneration in two cases of hate speech made during the last Lok Sabha polls.

A news report based on the sting aired by Headlines Today Wednesday evening showed several \"witnesses\" claiming that they were under pressure by the local police to avoid getting themselves involved in a political crossfire and turn hostile to wrap up the cases.

While the \"witnesses\" caught on the camera acknowledged being nudged to do so, the report broadcast also showed local leaders from the BJP and the SP suggesting they had prior knowledge of such tactics being employed.

Varun, on his part, rubbished the claims made in the news report and accused Tehelka of holding anti-BJP bias and describing the report as a diversionary tactics. \"It is clear certain vested interests are not happy with the court\'s verdict,\" Varun said in a statement to counter the claims.

The sting operation claimed that the Pilibhit MP had helped SP candidate Riaz Ahmed in the Assembly elections last year against the official BJP nominee and Ahmed had repaid him by getting the witnesses in the hate speech cases to turn hostile.
