Pressure on Putin over Syria crisis

15 May, 2013 01:22

But US President Barack Obama warned that old suspicions could undermine the newly found \"common ground\".

Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron tried during their meeting at the White House yesterday to build momentum for a newly proposed conference on Syria, sponsored by the US and Russia, now expected to take place next month.

\"Syria\'s history is being written in the blood of her people and it is happening on our watch,\" Cameron said. \"The world urgently needs to come together to bring the killing to an end.\"

Cameron, fresh from a trip to Russia, one of the few remaining backers of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, said he believed that Washington, London and Moscow had found \"common ground\" on the crisis which has left tens of thousands dead.

Obama, playing on Russian pretensions to global leadership to budge Putin, said Russia, \"as a leader on the world stage\", had an \"interest as well as an obligation\" to help end the violence.
