PAU HOLDS SEMINAR ON GRAFTING TECHNIQUES IN VEGETABLE CROPS

LUDHIANA, MAY 8:



A one-day seminar on "Grafting Techniques in Vegetable Crops" was organized by the Department of Vegetable Science of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The progressive vegetable growers from across the Punjab state; and students and faculty of the PAU Departments of Vegetable Science and Fruit Science participated in the seminar.



On this occasion, the owner of VNR Seeds Raipur, Chhattisgarh; Dr Narayan Chawda, who has commercialized the technology in horticultural crops, was the guest speaker. Giving presentation on the topic "Global Vegetable Grafting Scenario and Prospects of Adoption of the Technology," he highlighted that vegetable grafting is an innovative technology to manage various biotic and abiotic stresses, especially, the soil borne ones. Various grafting techniques applicable to different vegetable crops were demonstrated. Dr Chawda identified various rootstock- scion combinations in cucurbit and solanaceous vegetables to mitigate adverse effects of stressful conditions.



Chairing the session, Dr APS Gill, former Professor of Floriculture, PAU, shed light on the relevance of the emerging technology vis-à-vis the current scenario of vegetable crop production.



Earlier, welcoming the speaker and the participants, Dr M. S. Dhaliwal, Head, Department of Vegetable Science, conducted question-answer session.



Dr R. S. Punia of Doctor Seeds gave a brief introduction of the speaker.
