Prithvi stuns defending champion Irfan for title

CHENNAI, April 14, 2013

SRM University's Prithvi unseated defending champion Irfan Hussain of SSN College of Engineering to win the men's singles title in the SSN Open tennis championship which concluded at the SSN campus on Friday. It may be noted that Prithvi had won two gold medals last week in the National Games for the deaf at Aurangabad.

Interestingly, Prithvi achieved a double with Rithwik.

The title contest — which Prithvi won 6-4, 7-5 — was an intense battle featuring several rallies and twists. Leading 5-4 in the first set, Prithvi broke in the 10th game to take the set 6-4.

In the second, it was even going until 4-4, and Irfran looked set to forge ahead, but Prithvi rallied to level at 5-5 and went on to capture the set and match 7-5.

Ms. Kala Vijayakumar, president, SSN Institutions, gave away the prizes in the presence of the Principal, Dr. S. Salivahanan.

The results: Men's singles semifinals: Irfan Hussain bt Murtaza Lohani 6-1, 6-1; Prithvi bt Fahad 6-1, 6-0.

Doubles (finals): Prithvi & Rithwik (SRM) bt Irfan & Vishwajit (SSN) 6-2, 6-2.
