Petition seeking extension for CJ filed in Pakistan court

A Pakistani man has petitioned the Supreme Court to extend Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry\'s tenure for about two years, saying he should be compensated for the period when he was deposed by former dictator Pervez Musharraf.

Imtiaz Rasheed Qureshi of Save Judiciary Committee filed a constitutional petition in the Lahore registry of the Supreme Court yesterday in which he sought the extension of the Chief Justice\'s tenure by 22 months.

The Chief Justice, who has doggedly pursued cases of corruption, is set to retire on December 12. In his petition, Qureshi said the Chief Justice could not perform his duties for 22 months after Musharraf deposed members of the superior judiciary and placed them under house arrest during the 2007 emergency.

As the Chief Justice had been affected by the unconstitutional acts of the former dictator, he should be compensated by extending his service for 22 months, Qureshi

contended.

He also asked the apex court to stop the retirement of the Chief Justice. It could not immediately be ascertained when the petition would be heard by the apex court.
