Dacoits kill 32-year-old son of senior lawyer in East Delhi

The 32-year-old son of former Director of Prosecution was killed when he resisted a robbery at his home in Preet Vihar, East Delhi, in the early hours of Thursday.

Police said at least six armed dacoits had entered the B-Block, Madhuban Colony, house of Sumer Kumar Datta (70) around 2.30 am. They held Datta, his wife Prabha (67) and son Animesh captive and ransacked the house before making off with Rs 25,000 and gold jewellery.

The Dattas told police that the dacoits, who were armed with guns and daggers, said they \"did not wish to harm them\" but strangled Animesh when he shouted for help.

Police were told that the dacoits seemed to be in their mid-20s. They entered the Dattas\' home by removing the iron grille of the drawing room.

\"He (Datta) told us that they had heard their son\'s screams. It\'s possible that the gang split in two — one group entered the couple\'s room while another went inside Animesh\'s room,\" Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Prabhakar said.

The dacoits then gagged and tied up the elderly couple. Police said the dacoits told the couple that they would not harm them if they \"kept silent\" and \"let them do their work\".

Police were told that the main gate of the house was not locked at night. \"We usually do not lock our gate. We do not even put the latch. We had never felt the need to do so before,\" Datta was heard telling officials from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) who were trying to lift fingerprints from the main gate. Forensic experts also tried to lift possible evidence from Animesh\'s room.

Datta told Newsline that he and his wife woke up to Animesh\'s call for help. \"We were woken up by loud shouts and I heard my son\'s voice. We rushed towards his room but 6 to 7 masked persons came into our room. They held a gun to my head and asked me to keep quiet. They were holding huge daggers and were talking in Hindi. They ransacked the house and tied mine and Prabha\'s hands and feet,\" he said.
